iDrac 7 License Not Recognised

We have recently replaced a failed motherboard in an R820 and are having issues with the iDrac license.

The replacement which we bought from eBay appears to have an enterprise license, the iDrac shows it, says it's an enterprise, but the console is saying it needs an enterprise license to work!!

I don't mind buying another license, but my concern is that we will have exactly the same issue.

Hello,

I have resent iDRAC enterprise License to your email address. Could you try to import that license?

Also Could you try to soft reset iDRAC please?  via link https://dell.to/3j9Pa7I

Let us know if it helps.

Hi,

I deleted the existing license and imported the one you sent...  no effect. I then performed a soft reset on the iDrac... no effect.

Kind Regards,

Hi PeterRanson,

You can also tried Digital Locker https://dell.to/2Eulnrl but after replaced motherboard, it is imported to service tag is changed or not. because the license linked service tag and if the service tag is changed hence license does not fit on this motherboard. Could you check Service Tag is solid on the new motherboard? Is the Service Tag the same before replaced motherboard? This is very important.

Thanks for sending this over but no luck.

With regards to the server in general. The chassis actually has a different service tag, the old one on it. As we purchased it second hand we did not have access to the digital locker to restore the license, so we just kept the one that was on the new motherboard, which is the service tag you can see on the screenshot.

The only other thing that is weird about this server is that the BIOS looks different to all the others. It is a 100% keyboard version that has no use of the mouse. The bios is exactly the same version as we have on other servers, it just has a different UI style.

Hi,

Could you ensure BIOS is up to date? Maybe the BIOS has stayed old version after motherboard replaced. I can see latest BIOS 2.7.0 https://dell.to/2YA88fO

We cannot apply for the IDRAC License because the service tag is not the same as the original one. I did some research and I found this Dell Live Image included some tool which is called Asset Tag utility. I'm not sure if it will work because I haven't been able to try it before, but if it won't be a problem for you, you can try this.

This version is the latest version for R820 https://dell.to/31tFizy

I read that it is in the old version if it is not in the new version https://dell.to/2YzQU1X

Sorry for delay, i had to travel to the DC where it is located.

I have solved the Bios issue, it was becuase serial communication was enabled, i have disabled that and the normal Bios is showing.

I have also used that utility to change the service tag to the one on the chassis. The iDrac is now showing as unlicensed as expected.

Would you be able to send me the license for the chassis service tag? it did have one before the old motherboard died.

Please see picture below showing the service tag in question (on the pullout card, not display)

Hello,

I hope it works this time. I changed cases service tag with the original one. I resend your iDRAC Enterprise license to your email address. Please try this license. But you may still need to change the Service Tag on the Motherboard. Before forget, for personal info safety, please remove the photo and keep your photo and save in safe. If needed again you can reach us via private message. But I already attached it to in case.

Hi,

I could edit your post and removed the only photo. I just tried to regenerate the license again and sent it. You already did a soft reset to iDRAC maybe we can try hard reset it but iDRAC configuration turns default settings. (https://dell.to/3lohgOl

Except those, if it has the same issue Could you try iDRAC 7 trial license from here ? https://dell.to/34G881N

Hi,

Thanks for sending over... still same problem!!! Have imported license, it is showing as enterprise with green tick, but console still complaining. This was after an iDrac soft reset.

I can't see how to remove the photo by the way, perhaps you can?

Sorry for the late reply, after resetting it we lost connectivity to it which required a physical visit which was only just completed today.

In short same issue. This is what we have tried thus far.

1) iDrac reset to defaults (hard reset)

2) Server NVRAM + PSW_EN jumper reset on main motherboard

3) Bios reset to defaults

4) Re-flash with freshly downloaded iDrac firmware

5) Trial license rather than actual one

6) Different browsers/machines

Unfortunately none of this has worked.

Where can we go from here?

Hi, Please refer to the link below. “6. In the event that I lose access to my iDRAC7 with Lifecycle Controller license(s), what is the process to recover my license(s)?”

https://dell.to/3cXji4h

hope this helps and have a great one.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but other than a dead link on that page, there is no real information provided. I also suspect that any steps for recovering licenses etc have already been completed on this thread.

We are starting to become resigned to the fact that we will need to purchase yet another system board...

Hi again,

Please try to retrieve it from your Dell Digital Locker website https://dell.to/2GCIh0I

If you have not registered the product to your digital locker then there should be a contact listed on the locker page to add a product. A code is provided in the purchase documentation to add the server to the digital locker. If you don't have that code then the contact listed may be able to create a new one.

if it does not work then Unfourtanetly, I agree with you. I can not think of anything other than an iDRAC failure(board).

just to finish this thread off for anyone looking.

We decided to bite the bullet and shell out $300 for another system board which included an enterprise iDrac license. This luckily is working fine, but we have not taken the risk of trying to rename the service tag on it. The system board and chassis will just have to no longer match.
