system status indicator blinking amber, Voltage sensor detected a failure value

Hi all,

I have a system status indicator blinking amber on my PowerEdge 2450 with W2k Server installed. I found out that "The green system status indicator blinks amber when a system failure is detected".

I also noticed an error event in my event viewer:

Event Type:         Error

Event Source:      Dell OpenManage Server Agent

Event Category:  None

Event ID:              1154

Date:                     2-8-2004

Time:                     15:56:26

User:                      N/A

Computer:

Description:

Voltage sensor detected a failure value

Sensor location: SCSI A external termination

Chassis location: Main System Chassis

Previous state was: Unknown

Voltage sensor value (in Volts): +1.264

I am not sure whether this error is related to the blinking amber light...

..some progress..

I just executed SMFLSHNT.EXE (part of the  ESM version A42 software) and this stopped the blinking amber led. After updating the bios to version A09 en and installing OpenManage version 3.8 I was able to get more detail on this issue.

However, the problem still exists:

OpenManage - Main system chassis - Voltages -SCSI A external termination displays:

status: critical

reading 1.236 V

Minimum Failure Treshold 3.750 V

Maximum failure Treshold 5.500 V

..

The machine has an internal scsi card to which a tapestreamer is connected and it looks like this is the one causing this error. But what does this mean, a faulty scsi card (Adaptec 3960D Ultra 160/m pci scsi card)?

Thanks,

Alfred.

Hi Alfred,

This problem is within the SCSI Backplane. Usually a cable is either loose, defective or cabled improperly.

I would recommend removing, inspecting and reseating all connections on the SCSI Backplane, including the hard drives and backplane daughtercard (assuming this is a PowerEdge 2450 / 2550)
