PowerEdge 2800 and Server 2008 R2

I'm trying to install Server 2008 R2 on a PowerEdge 2800.  I've downloaded the latest System Build and Update Utility as well as the Windows OS Install Support Pack.  The install begins, I select Server 2008 R2 as the OS and it gets through the first reboot where it requires the OS media.  I insert the Server 2008 R2 and it comes back with the message:

You chose to install 32 bit operating system.  However, the media seems to be a 64 bit installation media.  Please insert the correct media or choose another version of the operating system.

There is only one option to select Server 2008 R2 and R2 is 64 bit only.  Has anyone else came across this issue?

I have not seen that particular issue, but then again, I've never used SBUU to install 2008R2.  I have R2 on all my 2800's and 2850's - all installed directly from the OS DVD (or USB) with no problems.

Go to http://support.dell.com, Drivers and Downloads, enter your Service Tag or select your model (PowerEdge 2800), change the OS to 2008 R2, click the arrow to expand SCSI RAID, click on PERC 4e/Di (under LSI Logic Driver), choose the Hard Drive version, download and run it to extract the files, then put those files on a USB/CD/floppy, and when 2008 R2 says it can't find the drives, click on the Load Driver link in the bottom-left corner.  Just remember that the PERC does NOT support non-RAID, so you MUST configure RAID in the CTRL-M utility before attempting to install, or even with the right driver no hard drives will be seen.

installing straight from DVD is working.  just seems strange that the utility that is supposed to be downloaded to do this does not work correctly.  i like to use the system build disk when possible.  it makes installing drivers easier.

Not sure why it wouldn't be working ... there are some other small bugs in v6.4, so I wonder if that is another one (or related).

You'll find installing 2008R2 on this machine requires very little in the way of drivers ...

RAID Driver (which you would have by now figured out):

OpenManage Server Administrator (if you have a DRAC installed):

Keep in mind that with a 2970, the problem (and solution) will be completely different.

What have you tried?  (versions, files, OS's, service packs, steps, etc.)

On the 2970, besides the RAID controller, you have to also worry about the Broadcom chipset to which the DVD drive is connected:

Make sure you configure RAID in CTRL-R (or CTRL-C) before attempting to install.

Aha!  That Broadcom link appears to be the solution -- booted direct to the OS install disk and then that driver. I guess I didn't consider that it was the DVD driver that was missing (since it booted from there!)..

Anyway, thanks for such a fast response.  I still think there is something wrong with the Dell install way -- I was using Systems Build and Update 6.5 along with the OS install support disk 6.2 and  that's where I got the error from the original post.  The OS I selected was Windows 2008 R2.

I am having this same issue on a PowerEdge 2970.  Did you find a solution?

I will retry with the direct install as above, but that was giving errors on missing drivers.  Could be the RAID one, though.

The 2970 has always had issues with SBUU for some reason.  I might recommend, when installing 2008 and later, using SMTD rather than SBUU.  SMTD contains SBUU, but also contains all other support files not included with SBUU.

It is a bizarre issue with the Broadcom chipset driver ... if you install 2008 using a USB key, there will actually be no DVD drive listed in [My] Computer, because it doesn't have the driver ... and Windows can see and use it, up to a certain point, at which point, it either hangs or blue screens.

Glad it worked for you.

Sorry ... I just want to make sure there is not a typo.  There is no 2600 "series" - there is a 2600 tower server and a 2650 rack server.  They are different enough that we need to know which.  Also, since this thread is about a 2800, 2008 R2, and a different message than you describe ... just wanted to make sure we know which system and OS you are working with.

At what point during the installation do you see this message.

Try a different CD to install with. Try reseating your CD drive/cables.  Try a different CD drive.

I have inserted Windows 2003 server R2 CD and Windows 2008 server but the error is same.

1) There are different type of error occurred when the windows server 2008 DVD inserted. The error was:

status: 0x00000e9

Info: An I/O error occurred

2) When the windows server 2003 CD inserted the error was:

missing file from the CD: adminpak.msi

Are you booting to these disks or are you attempting to run them from within the installed OS?

Given that it doesn't work with either disk, I'd say your CD drive is bad.  The 2600 cannot boot to USB devices, so you'll need to replace the drive or do a network install (if it is indeed your CD drive).
