R710 - best way to update ESXi 4.1?

Hi,

I did a successful update of an R710 to ESXi 4.1U3 (embedded) using the CD image VMware-VMvisor-Dell-RecoveryCD-4.1.0.update03-800380.x86_64-DellCustomized_A00.iso and ended up having to reconfigure the server as all the settings were reset. Didn't seem like there was an in place upgrade option on the CD boot menu - did I use the wrong CD or is that expected behavior? Found the download but no upgrade instructions.

Thanks

Hi there, it is normal for the bootable installation/recovery CD to delete the current configuration. Unfortunately, Dell does not provide an in-place update mechanism for ESXi. VMware does support a couple methods depending on your infrastructure -- for single host updates there is vihostupdate and for multiple hosts managed by vCenter, there is the vCenter Update Manager. These are detailed in www.vmware.com/.../vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf . Dell's customized installation bundles the standard VMware distribution with modified support links and Dell-specific hardware drivers so it should not be too much trouble to update.
