Is EMCPower.Linux version 6.0.x available for SLES 12 SP2?

I checked, and SLES 12 SP1 runs a 3.12.x kernel and SP2 runs a 4.4.x kernel, so I guess we need a new I have some SLES 12 SP1 servers with PowerPath installed (EMCPower.LINUX-6.1.0.00.00-091.SLEES12SP1.x86_64.rpm) and they are working fine. We are in the process of upgrading the OS to SLES 12 SP2, having upgraded 1 server so far, and after that PowerPath is no longer working. The kernel modules are not loading, so I removed the packafe (rpm -e EMCPower.LINUX) which appears to have worked, but when I try to reinstall the package it givesThe following messages and fails to install:

# rpm -i EMCPower.LINUX-6.1.0.00.00-091.SLES12SP1.x86_64.rpm

This PowerPath package does not support this kernel.

error: %pre(EMCpower.LINUX-6.1.0.00.00-091.sles12sp1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 1

error: EMCpower.LINUX-6.1.0.00.00-091.sles12sp1.x86_64: install failed

I checked, and SLES 12 SP1 runs a 3.12.x kernel and SLES 12 SP2 iuns a 4.4.x kernel, so I assume that is why the SP1 version of the EMCPower.Linux package won't install. I have searched and cannot find a package fro SLES 12 SP2. Does one exist, and if so where can I download it?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

Hi Sean,  I see your initial question didn't mention Oracle Linux.

The current PowerPath 6.1 for Linux Release Notes (link attached above) will clear up difference in the Oracle Linux uek kernels and the SUSE ones you are questioning.

See page 4 Table 1 Revision history:

02 August 2016 Added support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 12 SP1

Also See page 21 Table 13 for SUSE for *minimum* kernel and kernel type:

SLES 12 SP1 kernel-default-3.12.59-60.41

Note SLES 12 SP2 is not listed as being tested an qualified

The supported upgrade paths are listed on page 24.

Note: for PP 6.1 on SUSE 12 SP1, perform a fresh installation of PP 6.1

The above link to elabnavigator Simple Support Matrix also supports we've only tested and qualified PP 6.1 with SLES 12 SP1 and not SP2.

An RPQ would be needed to verify (test and configure) this configuration for qualification.

I hope this helps.

Hi Sean,

Unfortunately support for  UEK4 and UEK4 U1 kernels is not available with Powerpath Linux 6.1.

There is a KB article detailing this -please refer to :

485300 : Unavailability of PowerPath support with UEK4 and UEK4 U1 kernels on OL 6.x and OL 7.x https://support.emc.com/kb/485300

Gearóid,,

Thanks for the information. I am not sure what you mean by UEK4 and UEK4 U1 kernels, but the document that you linked to has to do with Oracle Linux versions 6.x and 7.x running 4.1.x kernel versions. SLES 12 SP2 runs a 4.4.x kernel version. Do you know if the issues in the 4.1.x kernel version that are described in that document still exist in the 4.4.x kernel version?  Also, it is hard to relate those internal Oracle bug numbers with SUSE bug numbers. If those bugs do still exist in the 4.4.x kernel, can you provide the upstream kernel bug numbers, or the related SUSE bug numbers so that I can ask SUSE support about them?

Thanks,

Sean
