Mapped disk from PowerVault MD3200 disappears from the host after reboot

Hello,

We've just bought Dell PowerVault MD3200 (External SAS RAID 12 Bays Array with Single Controller) and trying to connect it to our HP ProLiant server DL380G5 thru SAS port. PowerVault storage manager has connected to disk array and we have configured disk group, virtual disk, host and corresponding mapping for the host after all the configuration host has located new local disk and everything was OK. But after first server reboot this newly mapped disk has disappeared and all the attempts to rescan the disks in the OS or to remap this disk to host in the storage manager were unsuccessful. After the next reboot the disk came back again. But now when we reboot the host server sometimes the disk again is not accessible and we need reboot the host server again and again and wait when the disk will be seen in the OS again. Restart of any services in the host OS does not help - only full server restart helps.

Host OS is Windows 2008 (not R2) x64 SP2.

Please assist.

Thanks,

Nikolay

Also; did you install at least the host software on this server? This installs the appropriate MPIO driver for the SAN.

Nikolay,

I have a couple questions regarding the set up of the array. First thing is what version of the Firmware is installed on the controller on the MD3200? Also what SAS card do you have in the Server that connects to the storage array? Are you connecting 1 or 2 cables going from the SAS card to the single controller on the MD3200? If you are using 2 cables from the host to the storage array you need to make sure that both WWN's are added to the same host group.

The link above on page 11 shows the cabling and has some info for a single controller configuration. Just so you have it for your records.  I look forward to hearing back from you.

After looking into the card that you are using to connect this MD3200, I would say that may be the reason. The P800 card you have is a 3Gbps and the MD3200 is a 6Gbps array. With that being said it sounds like the card is not able to keep up with the speed of the array and is losing the mapping of the drive.

Above is the link to the support matrix and on page 6 it shows the card that is supported to work with the MD3200. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Kenny,

Thank you for your reply!

Current Firmware version:  07.80.41.60

NVSRAM version: N26X0-780890-001

On the server side we have HP SmartArray P800 card one external SAS port of which is connected to HP MSA Disk Enclosure, second port is connected to Dell MD3200. We use only one SAS cable for connection to Dell enclosure at the moment.

Thanks,

Nikolay

Unfortunately not, those arrays are meant to run at that one speed with that one card. Your best bet would be to get that SAS 6Gbps card and put it into your host and then connect the MD3200 to that card and you shouldn't have any issues with it.

So, HP p800 card is not supported with MD3200 and there is no way to limit the SAS interface speed from Dell array in software?

Thanks,

Nikolay
