Max disk size in a PowerVault MD1000?

The latest support matrix -- last updated in 2012 -- shows only 2TB drives.

We are approaching the year 2016.  Is 2TB still the maximum drive size usable in an MD1000?  Is there any reason that filling an MD1000 with 6TB SATA drives will not provide 90TB raw capacity?

Thank you.

Elsewhere on the internet people say no, 2TB is the max since I'm using PERC 6/E.

I just ordered 15 2TB WD Re drives to replace the dying Dell drives in our MD1000.

It would be great if anyone knowledgeable could confirm the above is accurate, and alert me if these WD drives won't work.

Apparently we have to pay $500 to get an "official" answer from a Dell engineer via phone, so this forum is our only reasonable support option!

Hello, Adam.

You are correct. 2TB is the limit on the MD1000. It's a somewhat outdated box is all.

That's definitely the official answer.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, I"ll be monitoring this post.

Thank you very much for confirming, Daniel, much appreciated!  The box is indeed old, but has worked  without any issues for the 3 years we've had it (inherited from another group) so we hope to get another few years out of it.

Understood. They just work. The MD line is a really strong array.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I know I'm late to the party but if it helps anyone I can confirm 3TB is fine in the MD1000 with either a PERC H800 or if you want to go the ZFS route I'm currently running three MD1000's with 45 3TB drives in a 100TB Volume with no issue connected to an LSI SAS HBA. (Dell can argue the MD1000 is old but nothing can touch them in pure value for big storage)

Waiting for a spare 4TB to come my way to test if the MD1000 will talk to it :)

I’d be interested to know if you’ve had success with the larger drives, and which controller card/cable you’ve gotten the MD1000 to work with ZFS.

According to my information, the MD1000 should handle 4TBs using the PERC H800 controller. Unfortunately, at the moment I do not have any discs to verify it in practice.

I'm curious if anyone has tested larger disks? I need to move 10 x 6TB hitachi enterprise SATA disks out of my server case to add more drives to the array, and we have a bunch of MD1000's sitting unused at work, which are looking quite handy right now, if the MD1000 will support the drives :D

Hello TheRealRendrag,

With an MD1000 it has a 3gb back plane in it so all the drives that you insert need to be 3gb speed.  Most newer drives are 6gb or 12gb speed and most 6gb drives will not downgrade to 3gb speed which is needed for an MD1000.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I'm running 15x10tb disks in my MD1000 with a H800 card. Been doing it for the last 3 years now.

@HumiKejerhag

Which drives are you running?

I was looking at the WP Arsenal. Can get them refurbed for about $160 each.
