No SNMP from MD3000i

Hi Dell Gurus!

I am trying to configure ITA to get information from our new MD3000i. (My first MD system)

The mgmt ports on the MD3000i are 192.168.128.101 and 192.168.128.102.

The ITA server is 192.168.128.246.

Both using 255.255.255.0 as their subnet.

IT Assistant (ITA) and MD Storage Manager is installed on the same machine.  I have enabled SNMP (community="public") on the MD3000i using the MD Storage Manager app.  Everything seems okay.

I have added the MD3000i ip address in the ITA app, in the "Include" range, and started a discovery and inventory.  After discovery, the MD3000i is only listed as a "Unknown" device.  I can see log events from the MD3000i, but that is it.

When I run the ITA Troubleshooting Tool and perform the SNMP connectivity test, it returns: "SNMP read request has failed Get Community names public".  (Same response for Set Community names...)  I even tried using GetIF (a simple SNMP walker) and got no SNMP response from the MD3000i.  No firewalls in-between the md3000i and the ITA server.

I ran a packet sniffer and saw the SNMP Get from the ITA server to the MD3000i, and a strange ICMP reply packet from MD3000i to the ITA server, stating that "Destination unreachable" and an error in the checksum of the packet.

I must be missing something simple.  Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Please help!

Two items are involved here.

First is that the version of ITA being used does not directly support the MD3000i, that's why it is listed under Unknown.

Download and use the latest version of ITA from support.dell.com. I use ITA version 8.2.0 with the MD3000i.

Next item is that the MD3000i does not natively support SNMP, traps are handled by the SMmonitor agent on the management station. As such attempting to communicate with the MD3000i via SNMP will fail. That's fine and all you have to do to verify your SNMP setup is to generate a Test Alert from the MD Storage Manager (Tools->Set Up SNMP alerts, select the configured SNMP destination and click the Test button). From within ITA your should see an Alert Test Message).

Dave,

You were right on the money.  I finally found ITA 8.2.0 on the OM 5.4.0 MgmtStat A00.exe image and installed it.  Works just fine.  I see the alerts test msgs in the ITA.  I understand what you mean by SNMP not natively supported by the MD3000, but that the MDSM SMmonitor app handles sending the messages to ITA.  Got it.

This forum has been very, very helpful in managing and configuring these Dell products.

Many thanks, Dave!

Hello, sirs!

I'm novice in this forum, but I'd like to get some help for a problem related to MD-3000i and SNMP. I need to integrate some elements of this type to the company's monitoring platform(HP Temip). Although the mains alerts are generated, the matching "clear"ones are not.

I tried to search for some direction and/or information on Internet, but no success...

I noted that Dave said that MD-3000i does not support SNMP natively. Could this problem be related to this fact?

Could somebody give any light?

Thanks.

The MD3000/i supports storage array critical events only, matching "clear" alerts are not generated.

Dave,

thanks for you attention. However, let me ask you another question: is there another way to clear an critical event alarm(i.e: disk fault) in a management platform(like HP Open View / Temip)?

Regards.

Marcelo,

All monitoring consoles have a way to clear events/alerts, however each is specific to the console in use whether HP OpenView or Dell Management Console. To determine how to clear them you'll really need to reference the specific usage documentation about that console.
