TL4000 question, can LTO-3 and LTO-5 drives be used simultaneously?

As the title mentions, can we purchase LTO-3 drives now and then at a later date add additional LTO-5 drives? We have purchased over 150 LTO03 tapes and don't want to waste them.

I'm pretty sure you may be able to upgrade to LTO-5 drives, but that you cannot mix LTO-3 and LTO-5 drives in the same unit.

Why can't we mix tapes if we have an LTO3 drive and an LTO5 drive?  Could we separate by creating a second logical drive?

Hello npolite,

Yes you can use LTO3 drives in your TL4000 now, and when you get your LTO5 you can add them to your TL4000. Once you add your LTO5 drives you will need to flash the firmware to ensure that they are seen. Also you will need to make sure that the barcode labels are used so that you can ensure that the correct media is loaded into the correct drive.
