DELL Precision 5820 - Core i9 - lifetime and build quality?

Hello,

I have the computer in my home already. I am not a fan of reinstalling and I like to keep my computer for next 10 years of daily use.

My old computer is my own builded (in 2010), still working with no issues. I spend about €2k for the computer.

Asus MB, lian-li chassis, Seasonic PSU, Kingston RAM, Asus GeForce, Samsung SSDs...

I saw lot of problems with the Precision PCs here. I am little bit unsure, what now. Keep the Precision PC or sell for more? I have it, new unused, with 4 years of premium warranty, for half of the original price.

Is the build quality really excellent? What about the PSU, MB and other important components?

Right now I have the Precision with original HW, Nvidia GF 3060Ti Founders Edition, 2x NVMe Dell SSDs, 2x SATA Samsung EVO SSDs, 32GB RAM (i will upgrade to 128GB) and of course, Core I9 10900X.

Can I really enjoy the computer for 10+ years, with no fails?

The configuration shared by you is up to the current standards, you could continue working on the system for a good amount of time.

Good luck D2MAC. I'm waiting for the third motherboard after just over a year of ownership. I thought about selling mine too. I couldn't do that knowing that replacing the motherboard doesn't actually solve the problem with the PC.

What motherboard model do you have?

I have been using the Dell 5820 Core X for over a year and during this time I have not had any problems with it. We also have a Dell 5810 in our company. It has been working continuously for over 5 years. It is turned off only on holidays. Also no problems.

@D2MAC eventually this is like with a car. You buy a car from a maker, and 99% of that model have no issues , then there's the 1% with some quirks... this applies also in this case. 99% ( but i'm just putting a number to state the point ) will have no issues running long hours for years, while a small % will incur in quirks... and it's hard to give a more precise answer.

Could be that components assembled in a specific date ( maybe hour ) and plant get by bad luck some not as good components that as a consequence tend to develop faults earlier, and so on and on.

Quality control is something that is always pursued, but there's always the chance of something slipping in.

Imho, if you like how the unit works ( once you have configured it for your needs ), you could give it a try

Realistically 10 years life expectancy from a computer is not realistic at all if you need performance. Hardware failures aside, workloads change, technology changes and what is fast now, will be slow in 10 years.

Look at hardware from 10 years ago compared to now. Benchmarks are a good way to see how far we have progressed in terms of performance.

The bigger issue with the Precision 5820 X299 platform is the power limits being enforced due to Dell's CPU cooling solution now allowing these high core count CPU's to operate at their turbo clocks under AVX workloads.
