Dell Precision T7910 CPU Upgrade

With the latest BIOS for the Dell Precision T7910 updated will the dual E5-2697 V4 processors work ok?

Does anyone know the differences between the E5-2xxx and E5-4xxx V4 processors?

I think the E5-2697 V4 processors is the highest I can go in the T7910?

You can go to cpu-upgrade.com, type in your current CPU, and you'll get a list of CPUs that potentially will work. I think that the E5-2699 v4 can be installed. I have dual 2699A v4- I think that this is probaly the fastest dual cpu setup for the FLG2011-3 socket in the 2699. There are lies, darned lies, and benchmarks. That said, passmark cpu ratings for the 2680 v3 and 2699A v4 are 25,000 and 47,800. A quad cpu xeon E5-4660 v4 cpu setup benchmarks at 30855. That CPU has fewer cores (16) and a slower normal and max clockspeed than the 2699A. The "46" series is about a half-year older than the "2699" chips and the lower performance (as near as I can tell, lower memory communication bandwidth) and the slower clock speeds limit the "46" performance. They do fit in the same physical slot, but I'm not sure if they have the same instruction set. So I think that the 2699A v4 is the fastest option. Expensive though: the CPUS are about 800 bucks each.

As for BIOS, look it up on the Dell site. Easy enough to upgrade. I just put in the A34 which I believe is the fastest. If you are running Win10, you can first download the Dell Command Update software and get all your drivers (and the BIOS) updated to the latest version.

Cheers, I picked up a bare bones T7910 and decided to go with the dual E5-2697 V4 CPU's for $350 each

These model CPU's support up to 2400MHz memory, so got 128GB (8x16GB) of memory @ 2400MHz

Also grabbed a couple of liquid cooled heatsinks on eBay, for some reason the T7910 case didn't come with a side vented panel so had to get one of these as well to help with the CPU ventilation.

I currently have a T7610 and with higher CPU speeds, memory FSB, SAS3 controller 12Gbps,

Cost to upgrade around $2000

The 2697 is much better bang for the buck -  I don't think going for the 2699s were worth it.  I have the same 128 Gb of DDR4 2400.  Not sure that there's even that much improvement between the 2133 and the 2400.  I put in an nvme PCI-E card in with a Samsung Evo 970.  I think that's pretty fast.  I didn't get the Dell quad ultraspeed, although if you wanted you could do that and do a RAID 10  with four nvme SSDs!

How much did you pay for the liquid coolers?  And how in the world did you find a vented panel!  That's some wizardry.  Good job!

To the last question I can answer, too. I was curious about the side panel so I went with a google search "t7910 side vented" it gives a few results https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-NVY9X-Precision-T7910-Vented-Case-Side-Panel-Lid-Liquid-Cooling-/174502905903 part number and pictures of the item

I don't do RAID just installed a 400GB SAS SSD drive for my OS and 3 x16TB SAS drives for all my movies and TV Shows I use with Plex on my computer.

I paid $300 for the liquid cooling heatsinks.

Some of the T7910's I have been looking at did have the vented side panel and don't know why the one I got didn't so went to NVY9X Genuine OEM Dell Precision T7910 Tower Vented Black Side Panel | eBay and brought one.

BTW, I'm selling a 2x 2680 CPU T7910 with 128 Gb of memory and two 500Gb SSDs, plus a 1Tb HDD, and a GTX 780 Ti graphics card. It works pretty well!  On ebay - do a search.

I'd like to upgrade my (2015) T7910 with its twin E5-2603 v3  to an E5-2680 v4.

Do you think that would need the liquid cooled heat sinks and the vented side panel?

And do you think this would be a good move?

Thanks

Can you safely upgrade a Dell T7910 from a dual E5-2690 v3 to E5-2699 v4?

Thanks

Yes it will, just make sure you have updated the BIOS to A34 before you install them

You can use the same memory, there is no point moving to 2400 MHz

I would look at the E5-2697 v4 CPU way cheaper than the E5-2699 v4 and not much difference in performance either.

For this conversion which RAM is suggested. I have currently 128Gb of DDR4 2133 Mz. Do I need to upgrade to DDR4 2400 Mz?
