[Precision 3630] [Ubuntu 18.04] No sound

Hello everybody out there!

My laboratory has just purchase a Dell Precision 3630 desktop computer for me. According to directives from CNRS, I had to encrypt my hard drives. Also, my laboratory uses the last Ubuntu LTS, being 18.04 nowadays, while the computer came with Ubuntu 16.04. Well, I must say I also do not like standard Ubuntu partitioning. Therefore, I had to reinstall the whole system.

Everything works fine, but for the sound: I cannot get any sound any more, while I did hear some sound when I first powered on the computer with installation from Dell. Therefore, I guess this is nothing but a configuration problem.

In the audio mixer, all I can see is a virtual output (as I am French, everything is in French) :audio-mixer.png

Here are some information on my system:

Well, something is wrong with Pulseaudio configuration, I guess, but I do not know what to do. Does anyone have some suggestion?

Best regards.

Hi, about to buy the very same PC and do more or less the same reinstall like you. Did you figure out the issue?

Hi,

Sorry to hear you have had this problem. Have you found a solution on the Ubuntu forums?

I'm also considering to buy this machine.

Is the problem solved?  Did or do you have other problems with this computer on Ubuntu?

Do you recommend us to buy this machine?   Please, let me know.

The recommendation to do this is to INSTALL ALONGSIDE windows using 18.04.2 LTS or higher

http://releases.ubuntu.com/18.04/ubuntu-18.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso

Disable secureboot in Windows 10
This is the most important step. The new secure boot feature of Windows , originally intended for security feature for rootkit viruses, prevents dual booting of Windows with Linux. To dual boot Windows with Linux, we must disable secure boot in UEFI.

How to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 [dual-boot]
  1. Download Ubuntu ISO image file. ...
  2. Create a bootable USB drive to write Ubuntu image file to USB.
  3. Shrink the Windows 10 partition (DISKMGR.MSC) to create space for Ubuntu.
  4. Run the Ubuntu live environment F12 BOOT DVD or USB FLASH and install it.
