Precision 670 - processor with Intel VT support

Hi,

I would like to use my old Dell Precision 670 to do some LVM based network storage.
Can someone tell me if it would be possible to upgrade the cpu to a version that supports Intel VT?

I tried to download and use Intel's Processor Identification Utility but it crashes every time it is run, so I don't have any information available from that side.

Alternatively I found Jan Steunebrink's CPU identification utility which gives me the following information:

------------------------------------------

CPU Identification utility v2.14 (c) 1997-2017 Jan Steunebrink
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi @Panen,

As indicated from JS's result, your existing Xeon 2800 CPU do not support Intel VT.

Wiki tells that the 1st Xeon CPU with Intel VT-x support is "Dempsey" family, like Xeon 5040. Also available for "Paxville_MP" family like Xeon 7030 and "Tulsa" family like Xeon 7120M/7130M.

CPU-Upgrade.com tells that chipset of your workstation, which is Intel E7525 (E7520 family), support all VT-ready Xeon CPU mentioned above.

Hi, once again thank you for helping out!
I just ordered 2 cpu's 7130M from ebay.
When I have them and installed them I will report back on the functioning.

Hi, I just received a couple of Xeon 7130M SL9HB from ebay.
When I simply replace the original cpu with the 7130M, the system does not boot, and diagnostic leds show:
green yellow yellow off

According to the setup guide this indicates "A possible VRM 0 failure has occured"
What does this imply?
What can I do to resolve this?Picture-4.png
As far as I'm aware there is a slot to add a VRM if you use an additional cpu, but that is not my case.
Any suggestions how to further diagnose or resolve?

Thanks for your help!

Hi again @Panen ,

Refer to this thread, VRM is the short form of Voltage Regulator Module, a small module that installs on a motherboard to regulate the voltage fed to the microprocessor. Nearly all motherboards have either a built-in voltage regulator or a VRM, the only difference being that the VRM is replaceable.

Here's what you need:

Noted that despite what the diagnostic light stand for, it may or may not related to VRM. A 670 user replied on the above thread that he finally have to replace the whole mobo to solve it.

Also, here's another thread for your reference on how CPU(s) and VRM to be populated for Precision 670.

Good luck!
