Windows 11 and T7910 / T7500
Hello,
I have a T7500 and T7910. Both have dual processors at 3GHz + and 12 cores along with 48GB for the 7500 and 128GB for the 7910.
Will Windows 11 be able to run on these computers?
What work will be necessary to get them to work?
I'd hate t see them turn it Russian bots because Windows isn't updated after 2025.
Thank you.

TPM 2.0 is not required.
Windows 11 upgraders will receive notification that the update is not advised but I think it will work anyway. YMMV this is all subject to change since 11 is not released yet.
The 7500 NON UEFI 2.3.1 non secure boot model is too old to meet minimum HARD FLOOR spec.
TPM 2.0 and CPU Generation are not HARD requirements.
UEFI CLASS 2.3.1 Secure Boot BIOS Capable IS a Hard Requirement.
UEFI GPT Boot Partition is a Hard Requirement.
Secure Boot ON is not a Hard Requirement.

4th Gen Haswell or newer IS a requirement due to Spectre and Meltdown issues that will NOT Be fixed.

T7500 is wayy to old.
7910 might have hardware TPM and INTEL PTT.
You would have to check to see if INTEL PTT is the only issue.
Intel PTT is basically the BIOS alternative to a the hardware based TPM. Intel PTT works on pretty much every processor/chipset since 4th Gen Core (Haswell) processors were introduced and it even supports BitLocker. This is because Intel PTT supports all Microsoft requirements for firmware Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) 2.0.

@bertrammoshier I'd suggest that neither computer meets the currently published CPU requirements which, for Intel processors, is 8th gen. or newer. Microsoft are currently assessing computers with 7th gen. Intel processors that are running Windows 11 in their Dev Channel to see if the requirements can be relaxed. Microsoft have categorically stated that Intel 6th gen. processors will not be supported and that computers in the Dev Channel not meeting the CPU requirement will cease to run Windows 11 following it's formal release this coming October. Free updates for existing Windows 10 users with PCs meeting the Windows 11 requirements will start in 2022.
Dell have published a list of their computers that have been tested for upgrade to Windows 11 and that will be supported with Windows 11 drivers here.

The T7500 has Legacy BIOS, which doesn't have Secure Boot. There won't be UEFI BIOS for the T7500.

Ubuntu Linux works fine on these models.

The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 1024MiB of RAM to install from this image.64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image

Apple's response to the Microsoft Power grab is to allow their os to be free and to support older hardware.

Users still hanging on to older Macs no longer have to pay $20 for their Mac OS X download thanks to new Apple support documents.
This means the Hackintosh community is going to have a field day.

Apple stopped charging for Mac OS X with the release of version 10.9 Mavericks, but users looking for older versions had to pay for the download codes via the Mac App Store. Both Mac OS X Lion and Mac OS X Mountain Lion are still available for purchase for $19.99 each.
In new support documents discovered by Macworld, Apple will allow users to access the download codes for these old operating systems for free.

Those who are feeling nostalgic can download the installers and run the old operating systems on compatible hardware on a partition, or on modern machines in a virtual machine.
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is available for older systems that are not compatible with the latest version of macOS and requires the following:

Yeah, I got Linux (Red Hat) on my first Dell workstation (TWO Dell 390s).
The problem came the programs I use are mostly Windows based and not Linux. I have lots of money in Windows only software and yes, I know about Vines. Vines runs a lot but not everything I use.
I just hate my systems becoming either boat anchors or a Russian hacker bots.

On your T7910, in case not already done so you will need to update TPM 1.2 to TPM2 this is described at Dell support site how to do this. Please note in case you are still on TPM 1.2. you wil get an error message "TPM is owned" on the Dell support site you can check how to overcome this.
I trust that after doing so by the end of 2021 you will be able to run w11 even on older Xeon processors on your T7910.

Wine is not Vines.

Wine works fine for ubuntu when you install DOTNET 2.0 3.5 sp1, Visual C++ 2010 x86 ,

The .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 offline installer is available on the DOTNET FULL INSTALL PAGE

The procedure below installs the latest version of Wine Stable, Wine Development, or Wine Staging.YMMV
Check installed architectures
Verify 64-bit architecture. The following command should respond with "amd64".
$ dpkg --print-architecture
See if 32-bit architecture is installed. The following command should respond with "i386".
$ dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
If "i386" is not displayed, execute the following.
$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
Recheck with.
$ dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
Add the WineHQ Ubuntu repository.
Get and install the repository key.
$ wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
$ sudo -H gpg -o /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/winehq.key.gpg --dearmor winehq.key
Add the repository.
$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main'
Update the package database.
$ sudo apt update
Install Wine
The next command will install Wine Stable. If you prefer Wine Development or Wine Staging, replace winehq-stable with either winehq-devel or with winehq-staging.
$ sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
Verify the installation succeeded.
$ wine --version

So Microsoft has gone from Gen7 minimum requirements to Gen 4?
I have installed Windows 11 Pro on my T7910 with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2697 v4 @ 2.30GHz and updated TPM from 1.2 to 2.0
I was unable to update Windows 11 from Windows 10, but a clean installed did the trick
Not sure if anyone else is having this problem but after installing Windows 11, I've not high CPU fan noise while the system is idle...

No, requirements are gen8 onward and some "selected" models of gen7. On all unsupported models you can officially do a full install, and any issues will not be addressed by microsoft or any oem... you will only get security updates

At this moment win11 is immature, sort of, and the ones that got offered the upgrade are, in my opinion, acting as test subjects... and that may be the reason Dell is not yet offering it on the supported 5820/7820/7920 (there's no win11 section in the drivers and such yet, too).
I would suggest to wait at least 6 months before trying it on an unsupported high end workstation (personal opinion, anyway)

No, not wrong.
That's why it's a test unit.
Lets see what happens when it tries to install the next version update???

So speedstep outlines the list of necessary things, and claytonb has forged ahead and done it. Thanks, guys. But is the upgrade advisable? If Dell is not providing any drivers or driver updates for the T7910 would one be better off running the machines until 2025 (and then switching them to pure Linux-base)? It might be useful to hear from experts as to which user profiles definitely will want Win11, which profiles will definitely not want it, and which profiles won't care. Any guidance will be appreciated, thanks.
