Hi NYHusker,

Thank you for your mail. It sounds great – an answer to my prayers!

I must admit that I do not know Rufus, but I have now read about it. How can it be used to download Windows 11?

And what do you mean by “strip it of pre-reqs”?

Sorry to bother you but I hope you will give me a little more information.

Thank you in advance.

Sonne.

Google Rufus 3.18 windows 11.  Click the first link from Ghacks.net (I tried to post the link but it would not let me!)

Once in Rufus Portable, it gives you an option to either select an ISO image, or download one.  When you select image option, you can use either a Standard Windows 11 installation with (TPM 2.0 and secure boot) or an Extended Windows 11 installation (no TPM/no Secure Boot)

You use a Thumb Drive, I'd recommend a USB 3.0 or 3.1 drive as it makes install on a USB 3 port much faster.

This can be used for either from scratch installs OR inplace upgrades.

From the article on the page linked above...

"Here is how you create bootable Windows 11 media that bypasses the restrictions for Inplace upgrades:

  1. Download Rufus 3.18 Beta or newer, when released, from the GitHub project website.
  2. Run the application with elevated rights.
  3. Insert a USB device that you want to turn into bootable media into the PC.
    • If you already have a Windows 11 ISO image, activate the Select button and select it using the file browser that opens.
    • If you don't have a Windows 11 ISO image already, check out our guide on downloading Windows 11, or use the Fido application that has been created by the developer of Rufus to download Windows 11. Alternatively, you may also select the tiny down-arrow button next to Select in the Rufus interface to switch it to Download. Rufus downloads Fido and you may use it to download a Windows 11 ISO to your system.
  4. Switch from Standard Windows 11 Installation (TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot) to Extended Windows 11 Installation (no TPM / no Secure Boot).
  5. Optional: you may change the volume label but should leave most options as they are.
  6. Select the Start button to create a bootable Windows 11 media that you may use to install Windows 11 from scratch or to perform Inplace repairs or upgrades with. Installation and upgrade will bypass the requirements check regarding TPM and secure boot."

Microsoft can always change it so that it stops working.  Best to get your ISO and Rufus now before its too late.

It works now but may not in the future.

You can also download the iso from within Rufus, as I said, without taking the extra step to download it elsewhere.  Which is why I shared the instructions to.

Instead of selecting an ISO, you can click the arrow next to select, choose DOWNLOAD, then CLICK download, , a box will pop up  after a few seconds, and give you the option to choose the version of Windows you want to download (Windows 7, 8.1, 10 or 11) then click continue.

Select release number which will vary over time as Win 11 versions change.  In this case it's 21H2 or 21H2 v1.  Then select Edition if applicable, and then click continue.  Change the language version to your area.  Click Download.  It will take some time depending on your download speed.

Then the rest of the process is as outlined above.

Additionally, this is not a requirement to do a Clean Install.  You can do an inplace upgrade as well.  I did it to 3 different computers last week for Windows 11 and everything including all installed programs and desktop icons and layout transferred over.
