Dell 7720 with Error M1004 and looses power

Check if the light is lit at the plug end of the AC adapter or on the adapter block. And see if that light remains lit when you plug it into the laptop's jack. If the AC adapter's light goes dark when you plug it into the laptop, then there may be a fault with the jack or the charging circuit.

Try a reset:

1. Disconnect all peripherals: printers; USB devices; media cards; USB hubs and extenders; etc.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
3. Disconnect the battery.
4. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual electricity.
5. Reconnect the AC adapter (without connecting the battery)
6. Reboot the laptop.

If that works, repeat the procedure and this time reconnect the battery.

Hold F2 while booting, to enter BIOS. See if the AC adapter is recognized in BIOS/Setup and if the battery is recognized.

If it does power up, I would run Dell Diagnostics:
Immediately after pressing the power button to turn on the laptop (or after clicking the Reboot command), press F12 repeatedly to enter the One Time Boot Menu, select Diagnostics and press Enter. The Dell Diagnostics will test all your hardware.

Hello, I have followed your suggestion. No changes. However, in bios, I have seen the report of thermal event.

Thermal Trip-System Board and the mention of the error code, M1004.

Your advice?

Is the power adapter recognized in BIOS?

Did the Dell Diagnostics report any errors?

Since you say that the laptop runs fine with the AC adapter and has a problem only when on battery, perhaps it's simply a failing battery. That laptop model is six years old, so if it's the original battery then it's almost certainly at end of life.

You can test the battery:

Open an Administrator CMD prompt (CMD, run as Administrator).
Paste this command, and then press Enter:
powercfg /batteryreport

That will show a figure for the designed battery capacity (when new) and the current ("full charge") capacity.

You could use Windows Reliability Monitor to identify software issues:

1) The charger cable does light up blue.

2) Diagnostics from Website, no issue.

3) Diagnostics from Bios saw no issue with battery, it was replaced with new Dell battery prior to these events. No negative reports on battery.

Finally this morning I used the laptop, did some updates from Dell, did some other tasks, suddenly powered off. No response to key press, or power button.

I have to wonder about the fans and cooling that are at the base of the unit. I have seen them spin, but I question the amount of cooling they are providing, and the chip that they are cooling?
