Posible Upgrade Graphic card for Dell Precision 7710

Hello every one,

I'm currently using the product Dell Precision 7710 for 4 years.

The VGA has been broken as per dell technician has told me and asked if I want to replace the same card which is AMD FirePro 5710.

I has asked them can it be replaced with stronger one but they keep telling me that it can't. Luckily that I do not beleive in them and check that the laptop could be support to nvidia quadro m5000m.

However, I want something more so I would like to know if my laptop could handle a more powerful VGA card or not. For like, P3000, P4000, P5000, P4200, P5200.

My system is:

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1575M V5 @3.00GHz

and broken AMD FirePro.

Thank you

If you have zero experience disassembling laptops, you might want to consider having a computer shop do the upgrade for you (Not GeekSquad)

If you want to do it yourself, you can download the Dell service manual for your laptop and follow the disassembly instructions.

To upgrade to any Quadro card, you need to make sure that your Heatsink part number matches the one in my previous post.  If it does not, make sure to order one with the part number : YJNJK.  If it is brand new all of the correct thermal pads should be pre-installed.

The easiest upgrade with a big performance boost would be the Dell Quadro M5000M 8GB card (part number : 1JY2V).  This will require no driver modifications, just install the Nvidia drivers and be on your way.  I have had no issues with any of the laptop GPUs that I have gotten off of ebay.

Yes you can upgrade to a faster GPU.
The 7710 came with the option for a Quadro M3000M, M4000M, or M5000M

You will need to swap the heatsink to the Nvidia MXM-B versoin (DPN: YJNJK)
Quadro M3000M 4GB (DPN: H99YY)
Quadro M4000M 4GB (DPN: 4XR03)
Quadro M5000M 8GB (DPN: 1JY2V)

If you do not mind modding your drivers, you can upgrade to a GPU from the Precision 7720.
Quadro P3000 6GB (DPN:  W8CKM)
Quadro P4000 8GB (DPN:  2T92C)
Quadro P5000 16GB (DPN:  Y42WJ)

I personally have installed the Quadro P4000 in my 7710 and it is an amazing upgrade.

I need details before being able to give any meaningful help.

1. Did the seller state what machine the P4000 came from? (or claim compatibility with the Precision 7710 or 7720)

2. Are you running with Optimus enables or disabled?

3. What is the GPU "Hardware ID" from the device manager?

@Stefen Guvstav

Did you buy the P4000 and when installing it did not work for you?
I bought a P4000 on ebay and when I installed it on my DELL 7710 it did not recognize it, and when I reinstalled my m4000m everything works ok. I understand that they are compatible with DELL 7710 ... I will request help from DELL technical service. If you have news, inform me. Regards.

Thanks James for your prompt reply.

1.- Buy the card on Ebay, and it does not say which machine it comes from, but the model is N17E-Q3-A1 compatible with 7710, 7720 and ZBOOK 17 G4.

2.- I will check if I am using optimus,

3.- Hardware ID of my m4000M is 13F9, must I configure the driver's .INF to recognize the P4000?

2. Does your Device Manager list 2 display adapter devices? (2 devices = Optimus, 1 Device = no optimus) (Or only 1 Intel device = System can't see the Nvidia card for some reason.)

3. Device name of the new Quadro P4000 with no drivers installed will be listed as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter".
Right click on this and go to properties
     Click on the Details tab
Select Hardware Ids from the drop down list
The first line is your full Hardware ID (Should start with "PCI\VEN_"
My Quadro P4000 running with Optimus disabled = PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BB7&SUBSYS_16DA1028&REV_A1

Important thing to remember when modding your .inf file.  Nvidia mobile GPUs have 2 hardware IDs, one for dedicated mode and one for Optimus.  Make sure you look at the device manager and get the Device ID in the same mode that you will be using.

Mr. James.
First of all I want to thank you for your valuable information, today I managed to update my DELL 7710 All thanks to you . I was very nervous, but managed to do it. Now I only have 2 doubts.

1.- How do you update the BIOS? Is the optimus option disabled and ready? Or should an extra step be taken?

2.- Piriform Speccy tells me 4095MB of memory and not 8192MB    But TechPowerUP GPU tells me 8192MB. In dxdiag it tells me 8089 VRAM.

My laptop has 32540MB of Ram. But systeminfo shows 37404 MB Total. Does this sum include the graphics card?

Open the "Device Manager" and expand the "Display adapters" section.

If there is only the NVIDIA Quadro P4000, then Optimus is disabled.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc then click "More Details"
Click the Performance tab.
Click on the Quadro P4000.
Look at the Dedicated GPU memory.

Thank you again Mr. James. I managed to verify and indeed the card is working with its 8GB.

I am very grateful for all your knowledge and time that you helped me. He is a great person, a virtual hug.
