Precision 5530 won't sleep/hibernate after using 2 monitors
Hello. I've had a new Precision 5530 mobile ws for about a month now and am having the following particular issue.
I've had issues at the end of every workday that I cannot put it to sleep or into hibernate. I disconnect my external monitors, allow Windows a couple of minutes to reset from 3 displays down to 1. When I close the lid either to sleep or hibernate, it won't. It's similar to other posts I've seen in the community where it goes into a sort of "limbo" state, that is that the screen goes off but the fans still run. I'm unable to wake it up - I tap on a key and the keyboard lights but it won't wake. I have to do a hard power down.
However I think I sort of narrowed it down.
I have 2 external displays, P2417H (1080p) and P2715Q (4K). After some troubleshooting I find that if only either one of them is connected, then after disconnecting I can sleep/hibernate. If both are connected, then consistently the laptop will not sleep.
The P2417H is connected through a MD15 usb-c dock, using mDP. 4K monitor is direct to HDMI port on laptop.
The million dollar question is, is there something I can do through a setting or driver to fix this? Or, is it simply that it's too much for the laptop to handle?
I'm already using the latest drivers and BIOS, and have used Dell Command | Update and SupportAssist to scan my system

Thanks, Alan. I did already try most of the steps, save for clean boot, system restore or OS reinstall.

@IamChange thanks for the update. Going back to your original statement, can you help me out with the following details please
a) Looking at the specification of the dock, it's not powerful enough to drive a 4K screen and a 1080p screen via the dock. It's dual display capabilities are limited to 2x FHD or WUXGA (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz) / (1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz). Have you tried running the 4K monitor off the dock and your other monitor off the laptop itself?
b)You mentioned that you disconnect the monitors from the system before putting it to sleep, what's the reasoning for doing this rather than putting to sleep before disconnecting the laptop from the dock and disconnecting the external monitor?
c) How exactly are you putting the system to sleep i.e locking the system and leaving it to go to sleep due to inactivity / closing the lid / pressing the power button?
d) How is your advanced power plan configured for closing the lid / power button etc?

a) I do not have both monitors connected to the dock (I'm aware it can't handle both if one is 4K). The 4K monitor is connected to the laptop's HDMI. I don't think I've tried them connected the other way around.
b) I just thought it would be better to reset it to a "single monitor state" before putting to sleep/hibernate. I do sometimes connect it at home and that's a completely different configuration.
c) Closing the lid
d) I have closing the lid set to hibernate. I have the power button set to shut down (for the time being I do a shut down)

Hi @IamChange,
a) Can you try switching around the 4K monitor to the dock and the other to the system to see if there is any difference.
b) If you don't disconnect the devices and put the system to sleep, do you still have the same problem?
c) Do you have the system set up to go to sleep after a period of inactivity, i.e once locked after 15 minutes?
d) If the above is set up correctly do you still have the same problem?
e) If it's not set up like that can you configure it to go to sleep after inactivity and let me know if it then still has problems waking from sleep
f) If you configure the power button to sleep rather than shut down, does it still have the sleep hibernate problems?

a) it actually caused a different problem after doing that. After switching I had to restart (for a different reason) and got a bluescreen with Power Driver State Failure. After hard reboot I switched back
b) if I hibernate while keeping devices connected, I do not have the same problem; it works
c) I have it set to sleep after 15 minutes (battery), 4 hrs (plugged in)
d) no. it sleeps (and wakes) fine after inactivity
F) yes, if I disconnect devices first. Otherwise, no; sleeps/wakes fine

@IamChange the issue here appears to be the method you are using to put the system to sleep after disconnecting the devices as it works if you don't disconnect them. That's quite strange and I can't explain why it would operate like that.
If you can, for a short testing period i.e 10 mins, use the system without connecting it to the monitors or dock and then put the system to sleep via either closing the lid, leaving it for 15 mins etc and then try and wake it
Does the system wake fine if you don't connect to a dock or external monitors?
