I had a look out there on Dell's website and am wondering if they misnamed one of the files?

If you look at the description of the file, it implies this might be an Adobe PDF file. You might try changing this filename to "smdall.pdf" and try opening with Adobe reader to see if my suspicions are correct. If it IS an Adobe PDF file..... well..... that's the reason for the error.

Did you try using the other file in the firmware downloads section? That file is here.

I assume you can print and can access the embedded web server (EWS) of the printer?

And you know where in the EWS pages you need to navigate to update the FW?

I have one of these in my office...... let me see if I encounter the same results. Give me a couple of hours.

I'ts not a pdf file.

It won't open with Acrobat and I also doubt that the release note would be a 16 mb file. Therefore I assumed that the pdf label on the dl page was a mistake by Dell.

I did try to use the other file in the dl section, but since I don't have a usb cable at hand I figured I'd use the same update procedure as I did when I updated last time -  which is the one described in my post.

I did not use a usb cable - I followed the instruction for network update.

Just finished downloading and "playing" with both.

It appears the ".....AUTOUPGRADE.exe" file has the wrong FW integrated within it as it's really intended for the 1600n, the predecessor to the 1815dn. This is the smaller of the two files.... ~6mb

The ".....smdall.hd" file downloaded and worked correctly. My 1815dn updated over a network connection with no issues. This is the LARGER of the two files.... ~16mb

I switched to Internet Explorer when accessing the printer's IP address. This solved the firmware update issue.

It's a shame that Dell can't provide an error message that is of any use. Why claim an "invalid filename/path" instead of advicing me that Firefox isn't supported?

However, now I also could reproduce an error that I encountered yesterday (a 404 http error message); the download link for the firmware doesn't always work, but here's the trick: change "http" to "ftp" in the beginning of the download link and you're good to go - it seems as this is also a Firefox issue since the http link always seems to work in IE.

SO..... which file did you actually use?

That's starnge with FireFox...... I've had to stop usiing IE at home because it's become so unreliable, and everything seems to work just great with FF.

Just an update fyi: Firmware for 1815dn dell laster fax printer version A06 also needed Internet Explorer to update firmware. Was trying with Firefox and getting the same inname message. Good Luck!
