I have a 3100cn but the same should apply.

Manually setup the printer options to use the MPF and envelopes, and then save these settings to the Favorites List.  After you do that, click on the Favorites Edit button, and re-order it so this new custom setting you created is at the top.  Now this should be the default setup for the printer.

Here is more info on the Favorites List:

No you don't have to manually adjust all the settings each time, if you set it up properly.

You can save these all these custom print settings to the "Favorites" list.   Once you do this, when you print, you just go into the Printing preferences and select the custom setting you created from the Favorites list.

To create these custom settings, set up all the manual options (i.e Paper Size, Duplex settings, Multiple Up, Output Color, Paper Tray, etc).  When you are happy with it, click on the Favorites - Save button and give it a name.   I currently have Standard, Duplex, Legal, Legal Duplex and Envelope.

thanks for the reply! so there's no way to have the printer automatically switch to tray 1 when the manual feed tray is empty?

I have the same problem, I want my Dell 5100CN to automatically pull from the front MPF first if it is open.  Did you ever figure out how to make it happen.  Like you I don't want to choose MPF from software - I want the printer to recognize when the MPF is open and loaded.

I am also having a problem where it never wants to take paper out of tray 1 it just keeps beeping and wanting manual feed paper.  Eventhough I switched it to Tray 1 Paper Source.  This all happened after I printed lables.  I never changed any of the settings before printing lables.  It there any way to force it to start picking it up from Tray 1 and not the Manual Feed.  Thanks

Ok people. The 5100cn will not automatically recognize that the mpf is loaded. You have to manually set it on the driver. I have one and have had plenty of usage experience with it. Its one of those common sense features that somehow slipped throught the cracks.

What has to be set on the driver to get the mpf tray to see that it is loaded? And do we know why the tray doesn't work like all others?
