Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)
Please remember to install the latest firmware for the 948 Printer .
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.
Choose your printer. Beneath your printer, select your operating system. You'll be redirected to another page. Then click on show all steps. It will walk you through the installation process.
Doing this the USB Root hubs re-installed themselves. Sometimes one of them are not working properly, even though the wizard says they are.
You did things this way...
Disconnected your printer, ran the patch, reatsrted your computer. Tried the USB Root hubs removal, then install the proper drivers, you'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)
After uninstalling all USB Root Hubs my mouse goes dead & doesnt work. I have to cold reboot my comp to b able to use the mouse. When I open the USB Controller Section again all the Root Hubs that I had uninstalled are back up.
Yes sir, theres about 4 root hub links that I uninstall & after completing the last one my mouse goes dead. Now, Ive had to cold shut down my comp 3 x's & i know this is not good, it can actually cause my comp to go defective. It happened to my XPS 210 from Dell & I had to spend hours on the phone with Microsofts research team to fix it.
So, is there another way we can go about fixing the problem with my computer not communicating with my AIO 948 printer?
Since you have the USB problem corrected, then all you need to do is make sure the printer is disconnected, run the patch, restart your computer. Install the proper drivers and connect the printer when prompted(powered on).

Pudgy One, I did make sure the printer was disconnected, run the patch, restart my computer. Installed the proper drivers and connect the printer when prompted(powered on). This didnt work. Kanmanibabu's advice didnt work as well. Any other suggestions? Im still getting the same error message thats claiming my printer cannot communicate with my computer.
Hey Johnny Cee! I am having the same problem with my 948. My printer was working fine. I had a virus on my pc, so i had to erase everything and start my pc from scratch. Every since then I get the same communications error. I've changed my usb plug, and done all the other troubleshooting ideas. Have u gotten your printer to work yet? If so, how did you do it?
You re-installed, so you chould have installed the drivers in this order. That would account for why your USB ports were NOT working.
The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first, then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.
Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.
:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Hi,
I have workaround for this issue
1. Disconnect the printer from computer
2. Type CMD on runline - type net stop spooler, it will give u a message Spooler service is stopped
3. Uninstalled the printer driver from add / remove programs, Dont restart
4. Type - Spool on Run line - Double Click on driver folder - Drag the file W32x86 and put it on the desktop
5. Reboot the system
6. Log in to support.dell.com - enter ur printer service tag / Choose the printer model and Choose driver for appropriate Opeating system Windows XP / Vista and save this file on Documents
7, Delete the folder W32X86 folder from desktop
8, Install the driver - While installing the driver, it will prompt to connect the printer - Byepass the printer from surge protector and connect to walloutlet. Once the driver is installed hopefully it will work
Please revert for any clarification
Thanks & Regards,

Johnny Cee,
It was the bold print making it seem like you were shouting. there were a couple of options but sometimes people aren't willing to work with us.
You can do this but need to make backup copies of all files and folders that you cannot afford to lose
