948 won't scan to computer

Question

I have a dell 948 all in one printer that is wireless connected to a laptop running vista home. The printer will not scan a document to the computer. I have to use the controls on the printer itself; the Dell All in one Center on my computer will not allow me to use its controls. so on the printer i select scan, color, then my computer's name, It recognizes the computer but when it gets to the 'downloading applications list' it stalls on that for a few minutes and then says 'cannot retrieve applications list.' In the dell All in one center I have about 10 applications that are automatically listed so I don;t know why it isn;t picking that up. I've tried changing the default application and that didn;t make a difference. I have had this printer for several years and I always had trouble with this scan feature before, which was connected wirelessly to a laptop running WP, but I was always able to get it to scan eventually. No luck now. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please follow these instructions and then tell me what happens.

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

I recommend that you use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings to get the best communications between the printer and all the computers.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) untiul it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

64-bit Drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

Please remember to install the latest firmware for the 948 Printer.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the desktop/notebook system utility and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

You should be able to install the system utility and the chipset drivers and go right down the list.

The Dell 948 printer, are you trying to connect it using the usb cable or the wireless adapter? If wireless adapter, was it connected to your network before?

Make and model of your computer and operating system is helpful. 32-bit or 64-bit?

What virus program and firewall are you using?
