Also, I was just checking about this update and the fixes and I noticed that it adds support for Vista.

I am still having problems printing on my Dimension 4700.  No problems on my Latitude D510.  This has been going on for weeks.  I'm actually alot closer now that I've installed this update as my PC does not freeze any more.  Have been speaking with someone in Austin but that has stalled and I am extremely frustrated.  They suggested doing a system repair and if that does not work, a complete OS re-install but that is not going to be an option.  Any suggestions?  I've been without a printer for 3 weeks.  Thanks.

It didn't fix my problem, which is that the first use of the All-In-One Center scans a lot of my folders then generates an error message saying "memory could not be written" (instruction at 0x7c910f83 references memory at 0x011481e2).  I followed the steps requested by Gina and am getting the identical symptoms that I've had for the past several weeks since I've been trying to get this resolved.  The printer and driver seem to work, at least for the few simple things I've tried, but the All-In-One Center "first use" always fails the same way.

I uninstalled previous installations using Add/Remove, I rebooted, I deleted all previous downloaded updates from Dell, including deleting all files and folders that were unzipped by previous installations, I downloaded the latest update (1-22-07 version), disconnected from the net, turned off my Firewall (Windows version), disabled Anti-Virus auto-protect (Symantec), and ran the update.  It always finds the Acrobat 6.0 setup program after unzipping, discovers I have a later version (Acrobat 7.0) and basically stops the installation.  I go to the directory where files and folders were unzipped and run the 966 setup.exe directly and it happily proceeds, I plug in the cable when requested, it successfully installs and prints the test page, I say NO to participating in the Dell Customer Experience Improvement Program, click Finish and then it starts the All-In-One Center, "first use".

After the first use starts running, the dialog box shows the program scanning folders on my disk, seems to be going in reverse alpha order, starts with Windows, then Program Files, the IBMTools (I have an IBM), then i386, then Documents and Settings (including all my pictures and music), then DLS3 (an application), then it gets to perhaps an offending folder that I can't see the name of because it instantly then generates the error.  This process is totally repeatable, identical in what must be the six times I've tried this process.

What else can I do?  Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

My printer is now up and running.  Apparently, it was an issue with McAfee.  I used the on-line chat support and it took less than 30 minutes.  Hope this helps.

Hi Gina and others.

I upgraded to Windows Vista last night on a six month old computer that is Windows Vista Premium Ready. I bought a Dell 966 All-in-One printer two months ago, and it was working fine before the upgrade to Vista. I've gone to the Dell website and downloaded the new driver that was included your post, but the printer still won't work.

I keep getting:

Communication Not Available
The printer cannot communicate with the computer

Try these solutions:
make sure it's powered on
disconnect and reconnect the USB cable
disconnect and reconnect the power cord
check firewall settings
restart the computer

I turned-off the firewall settings, and everything else is plugged-in correctly. How the heck do I get the darn printer to work with my computer (communicate)?

Thanks,
Rich

I am having the same connection problem as the above two posts.  Is anyone from Dell moderating this so we can get some answers?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling printer driver.

Manually stop and restart print spooler service.

Check as well the ports, it should be on USB Virtual port.

So let's give this a shot to get the previous printers removed:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel.
    The Control Panel window appears.
  2. In the left-hand pane of Control Panel click Classic View.
  3. Double-click Printers.
  4. Right click the desired printer and choose Uninstall.
The Confirm Device Uninstall window appears.
  5. Check the box next to Delete the driver software for this device.
  6. Click OK to confirm removal of the device.
  7. Reboot
  8. Reinstall the printer using the printer driver

Hi Gina,

I tried this tonight.  I do not get the communication error now but it now says that my driver is not installed - please install driver
I ran the new driver repeatedly, but it still comes up with the same error??
What am I doing wrong?

Go through the procedure in the previous post to remove the driver again. Then reboot your system. Then unplug the printer before you begin the installation of the driver. The software will say you must attach the printer at that point attach the printer.

Then let us know.
