AIO 944 printer fax will not fax

I had computer virus problem two weeks ago, and ended up reinstalling  windows xp, 
 and had start from scratch on everything.  All same equipment, connections. 

Dell AIO944 printer fax has been now reinstalled several times.
Scan and print are fine.  But it does not fax.   
Instead of activating the fax console to send out the fax,  documents simply print.

Fax button now equals Print button,  both the larger, main Fax button,
or when selected from Productivity Tools. 

Fax function is enabled, through Accessories/Communication settings.
Control Panel / Printers and Faxes  shows a separate hardware device as fax machine.
How to set Dell 944 as fax device?

I was able to send and receive test faxes using only "fax console" ,  so setting there are correct.

However, it is more difficult to coordinate various pages I need to scan, save, transmit, etc.
Help please, to get my Dell 944 back to functioning as fax.
