Can't reset cartridge empty message

I refill my own cartridges. The printer prints perfectly and the cartridges are obviously full but I can't clear the Ink Level indicators. Both the BW and color indicators always show that the cartridges are empty even though the cartridges are full and the printer is printing properly.

I've been through the manual and other documentation sources and have contacted Dell technical support (tried all their suggestions - power down/up, pull out cartridges out and put them back in). The main message I get from Dell is that if I want to get this empty indicator to go away I have to buy new cartridges from Dell. I know there is currently so legal hub-bub regarding printer companies making it as difficult as possible for customers to get around purchasing the grossly overpriced replacement cartridges.

How can I get some technical information on what the printer actually looks for regarding the ink status of cartridges. I don't think the printer can actually monitor the ink level in the cartridges. I think that somehow one can reset the ink level monitor when full cartridges are installed and the it monitor the ink level by the amount of pages printed or something like that.

Thank you.

You can't reset the ink level on a used ink cart. They are made to be that way.
