Cannot Scan Multiple Pages
I cannot scan multiple pages to a MS Word file using the Dell All-in-One Center. I followed the directions (selected Scan multiple items before output) to no avail. After selecting Scan Now, the program scans the first page and fire off MS Word without allowing me to scan another page.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Cliff

Dear Cliff,
I came looking to this board because I have a Lexmark 5150 which is the identical twin of your Dell A940 only with a different logo. I have exactly the same problem and have done a lengthy dance with Lexmark to try to solve it. Interestingly enough I have no problems scanning a multipage doc to be faxed, but of course that does not help me if I want to edit. Still, it is information that should help a technician solve the problem.
There is another post of this same problem in the Dell forum only on the Lexmark printer. So, this is not just your problem.
My lengthy e-mail dialogue with Lexmark wound up with - you need to dialogue with Dell.
Now that I have searched the forum for additional data, that is my next step. Let's keep at this and make them solve it.

let me see what happens.
well it seems to be working for me.
At first I was a little confused. I would select multi scan, then put it to scan pictures, and it would output on the first scan. After watching very closely, it turns out that turning on multiscan creates a 5th radio button called Advanced Settings. If you change it to Photo, or Newspaper, or any of them, multiscan is disabled. (and the 5th radio button disappears). You have to click on the Display Advanced Scan Settings again, click multiscan. Don't change anything else, just start the scan.
One more thing, you have to have already selected the output program. If you select multiscan, then change the output program, multiscan is again disabled. So select the output program, open advanced, set dpi, enable multiscan, then scan.

what i want to know is how to change the default scan program (Dell) to my program of choice. I don't want to change it everytime, I want to make Paint Shop Pro the default.
nm, found it. just had to look.

My problem is not with scanning multipage images, but with scanning to OCR for Word. I still can't make that work following the instructions religiously.

The only way I could get it to scan multi-pages to MS Word was to unselect OCR. Word didn't know what to do with the resulting TIF file though. It appears that the OCR program has a problem with multi-pages. This problem really make scanning to Word useless since most documents I would consider scanning would be more than one page.
I submitted the problem to Dell and will keep you informed about what they have to say about it.

It very likely that the OCR software bundled with the printer is not capable of doing multiple pages. In my experience the software that is bundled with hardware (i.e. printers, scanners, cd burners, digital cameras, etc) is limited to basic functionality. Full featured commercial OCR software packages typically run several hundred dollars. No manufacturer is going to bundle software like that with their product. Try checking out OmniPage Pro or ABBYY Fine Reader Pro for additional functionality.

Not so. On my Dim8200 which came with Office XP SBE, there is a start menu selection Microsoft Office Tools -> Utilities -> Microsoft Office Document Scanning. This offers a limited feature set but does do OCR.

I would recommend you to contact your vendor for technical support. They have the knowledge and expertise to best support their product and help you achieve a timely resolution. If you would like, I can provide you with vendor name and technical support number." Please contact the respective vendor for your printer and scanner troubleshooting.
Ok, but who do I contact for a Dell printer? I realize Lexmark makes the printers for Dell, but Is Lexmark providing support for Dell printers?

Hi, Cliff.
I have 7 dialogues with Lexmark on this and the final one reads:
"The issue is being caused by an element within Windows. I recommend trying the printer on another PC to see if the issue continues. If it doesn't then you may wish to consult with your PC manufacturer for further assistance."
Kyle P. - Lexmark Support Team
I don't have another computer to try it on, but my guess is that the problem would continue.
I have written to the makers of ABBYY Fine Reader to find out if their bundled software is supposed to scan multipage to OCR - so far no reply.
What really annoys me is that part of the strategy seems to be to keep pointing the finger at the other guy and leave the customer holding the bag. And they will never admit that they have had several people telling them that there is a problem.

Mary,
I installed the drivers and All-in-One program on another computer. Came up with the same results. I finally got an e-mail that addresses the problem. I admit I gave Dell the service tag number to my laptop instead of my printer. This probably caused the confusion. However, I clearly stated in my e-mails that the printer in question was a Dell. I wish the techs would read e-mails more carefully.
I was finally directed to call Dell Tech Support. Again confusion since I gave them the wrong tag number. After giving them the right tag number, I was informed I got the wrong department. My laptop is tied to Small Business and the printer is tied to Home/Home Office. I don't know why this makes a difference. The technician was nice enough to look at the problem anyway.
The answer is.... The OCR software does not support multiple pages. No explanation was given for why a muti-page option is provided, though.

Although the documentation doesn't say it will do multiple-page OCR, it doesn't say it won't. Also if you try to select multiple item scanning for other applications that don't support multiple-pages, the All-in-One Center gives you an error message.
In my opinion, the most use for multi-page scanning would be to OCR a multi-page document instead of retyping it into a wordprocessor.
