On the second computer try this.

Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name.

Type in the \\computername\printername

Resolved the issue! Thanks for the response. Tried the local port and it worked up to the point where a box opened listing a few printers/models and box for "have disk". Stopped at that point. Due to the wording of the error message went back to pc where the dell was installed and looked at the startup files. There are two files (DLCQtime.dll and Dlcqmon.exe) installed by the 966 installation that run at startup. The files prevented the networkded Windows from connecting with the installed printer. Disabled the two files, restarted the computer. Went to the other computer, add printer, selected networked printers, selected the 966, installed the driver and tested the printer. Back to the first computer, enabled the files, restarted. Back to second computer, tested the printer via properties, print test page and printed a document. Works great.

Must revise the previous boast. Started up the computers this am and wham, no networked dell 966 printer in control panel - printers. Tested various combinations of drivers. The printer is now installed as a local printer using the instructions from the above post. The drivers on the CD would install, but the printer would not print. Used the driver package from the dell download (R165317) and the printer now prints as a local printer even though it is networked. Will refrain from saying the issue is resolved until I test for a day or two.
