Mike,

Disconnect your printer.

Uninstall your printer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is gone. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the drivers from Canon's Website. I could not locate the printer drivers for the model number you posted. There is a MP C5500 series.

Install the drivers and software first. You should get a prompt that the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time.(powered on) If it doesn't install, try a different USB Port, try the front ones as well.

What happens?

Mike,

Let's try uninstalling the printer. After you uninstall the printer restart your computer. Make sure the printer's gone. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Now right click start, left click explore. Look for the programs files and then look for a Canon Printer folder and delete it. I think I'd try cleaning out the registry with a cleaner like CCleaner

Then restart one more time.

Now try installing the printer. If it doesn't install, try a different USB Port. Thinking maybe also try reinstalling the chipset drivers, if there is a USB Port issue.

Just places and things to try.

Thanks for that , after many hours on the net it seems to be a xp sp3 problem with all 3 in 1 printers ,

Setting chipset drivers a bit over my head , better take comp into local computer repair shop

thanks for the help
