I found my solution and thought I should share it. My problem was I could not use my Dell 3300 PS for my Dell 1710 printer with security settings higher than WEP. Many today think WEP is lacking too much in security and I have seen more than one TV program demonstrating the vulnerability of WEP security settings. Even my customers complained about my using WEP encryption instead of WPA or WPA2.

The new Linksys WPSM54G print server allows the basic function of printing to the Dell 1710 printer, but does not allow using the extra features such as toner level remaining and drum life remaining, both of which I rarely used anyway.  The new WPSM54G print server has the latest security settings, including WPA2, was my final choice and was very easy to set up, on first try.  On the Dell 1710 I can press the continue button 3 times to get a print out showing toner lever, drum life and many other settings.

Several hours with Dell Gold Tech Support confirmed the Dell 3300 print server's "WPA-PSK" security level is not compatible with the WPA settings in my Linksys WRT310N router, even with the latest firmware from the Linksys web site. The 3300 PS works with WEP security and also works with no security, but does not work with WPA security. The guys in the Pro-Tech support department were absolutely wonderful in helping to identify the incompatibility between WPA-PSK security in the Dell 3300 PS and my WRT310N router "WPA Personal" security settings.  These tech support heros also led me step by step in setting up a ad-hoc (direct from computer to 3300 PS which worked extremely well, although I chose not to use it.) The Pro-Tech team is worth ten times what I pay for it.  I do not get paid for advertising, but these guys are really great!

Helpful tips I learned include the following. When the 3300 PS is connected to the printer by USB, Press the "Test Button" on the back of the Dell 3300 PS one time to get one page of configuration settings printed from the Dell 3300 PS to the printer or press two tiimes to get 5 pages. This was most helpful to show when configurations were actually changed inside the 3300 PS and why the newly changed settings were not compatible with my router security settigs. I was wowed to see it prints the MAC address of every printer which prints through the 3300PS!  Another very helpful tip, I found on this forum, was to reset the Dell 3300 PS when the configurations could not be transmitted from the utility program in the computer into the D3300 PS.  To reset, disconnect all cords including the power cord from the Dell 3300 PS and then while holding in the test button plug the power back into the Dell 3300 PS and wait approximate 60 seconds for the lights to go off and then for the wireless light to come back on.

I suspect many other wireless print servers would provide the basic print function for the Dell 1710 printer, but not allow the extra non print features.

JohnDGregory,

I cannot talk about the Dell 1710.

I have a Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 connected to a Dell Photo Printer AIO 964. I use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11. I can print, scan and copy with no problems.

The 3300 does support WPS-PSK(TKIP) Security (Personal)
