If you're using a different language other than English(US) please let me know as you'll need different drivers. Drivers need to match the operating system.
Install the Vista 64-bit drivers using the Compatibility mode. You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
I downloaded the 64 bit version of the 924 driver from the Dell website (R148159). I selected the compatibility mode for Vista on the Setup program, and set it to run as Administrator. The Set Up dialog opened in Japanese (or Chinese - I'm not sure which)! What is going on??? I checked the language settings on the control panel, and all are set to the UK. I even cleared out all the Dell software with the Clear Up utility, rebooted, and downloaded a fresh driver, and the same thing happened.
I'm using Firefox as the Browser, but I can't see what I might be doing wrong.
I had lost patience before: now I'm about to bin the whole installation: PC and printer.
I wouldn't know they're not the English drivers if no one tells me. Disconnect the printer. Run the patch to remove the printer and restart your computer. make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Sorry, the comment about the Japanese was not meant as a criticism - I was totally taken aback by what I saw on the screen!
I think I have now reached the bottom of the barrel - I tried the XP driver you pointed me to (_G11AWeb64924EN), and saw exactly the same as I saw with the original attempted installation. The driver installation process initially showed that the 924 driver had been successfully installed, and then I got the next row but one had another line for the 924 driver which said it had failed. I searched the net and found another driver (_G11AWeb32924EN) which also failed.
I must be doing something very wrong, given others have had success. I have started out by running the Dell CleanUp utility (the executable is named 'setup.exe', so I assume this is the right thing), and have rebooted when asked. I have then checked the 'Devices and Printers' tab on the Control Panel, and verified that the 924 printer doesn't show. I have then set the properties on the driver 'setup.exe' file to the correct compatibility mode (using XP SP2, if base XP wasn't available) and clicking the 'Run as Administrator' check box. With this done, I have then double clicked the 'setup' program to run it - connecting the USB to the printer when requested. My problem is that I only have occasional access to the machine, as it is at a friend's address, and I can't be there all the time!
If I really have been doing this correctly, then I think the only solution is to get rid of the 924 and replace it with something that I know will work. If I have been messing it up, then please feel free to call me every name under the sun!
The procedure is really simple. Have 'net framework from Windows Updates and the latest Java. Run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer. Restart your computer. Remembver to install the drivers in the Compatibility mode
If this computer was upgraded to Windows 7, try installing the desktop/notebook utility and the chipset drivers first or the rest of the drivers will fail to install. If you cannot find the Windows 7 drivers, then try using the Vista(or XP) drivers in the Compatibility mode
Sorry Rick, but I am giving up. I have checked the Java status, rerun the clean up utility several times, have checked the Devices and Printers to ensure that the printer is not shown, downloaded the driver you pointed to (_G11AWeb64924EN), set the Properties on the Setup.exe to be compatible with Windows XP (SP2), and run as Administrator. The printer is initially unconnected: when instructed to connect, this is what I get:
USB Compatible Device - Ready to use
Dell Photo AIO Printer 924 - Ready to use
USB Printing Support - Ready to use
USB Input Device - Ready to use
Dell Photo AIO Printer 924 - No driver found.
THis PC has just been purchased from Dell with Windows 7 pre-loaded: I have touched nothing. It is Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.
Given that I can go and buy an HP equivalent wireless multi-function printer for £50, I can't see any point in continuing.

nigelphh,
Do you have Windows 7 32-bit? Start, control panel, system. There it should tell you if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.

nigelphh,
I asked because you were trying to install the Vista 32-bit drivers.
Run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Reatsrt your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
If you're using a different language other than English(US) please let me know as you'll need different drivers. Drivers need to match the operating system.
Download the Vista 64-bit drivers, using Internet Explorer. How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager
Install the Vista 64-bit drivers using the Compatibility mode. You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
Links to the patch/drivers can be found at Dell 924 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Rick,
It's the standard pre-configured Windows 7 - therefore 64 bit.

I have located XP 64-bit English drivers. I'm not sure if they work in the UK or not, so give them a try. Dell 924 Printer XP 64-bit English drivers. Install in the XP Compatibility mode
