I restarted my computer and the printer works like a charm. Thanks for your forum Rick! Hopefully I won't have to go through this again after changing the root hub USB power settings as advised. Note to everyone else: Follow EVERY step and I suggest changing your USB power settings as described earlier in the forum. Note to Rick: the java update link doesn't work.
I went through the steps again and realized I forgot to update my java. So I did that, went through the steps successfully, but now when I print it just gets to the que and stops from there. I read all 10 pages of the forum and I took the advice of disabling the power saving options from the network adapter and root hub USBs. I have windows firewall and use Panda Free Antivirus, but since it worked fine before with the same set-up, I don't think it is the firewall.
Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7,8 and 8.1 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
I realize this is a very old thread but I'm hoping to get some help from you (or another moderator/poster).
I am having difficulty with the Windows Vista 32 bit driver for my Dell 926 printer. Specifically, when I click on the above link for that driver, it takes me to a driver download page for my printer. On that page is the file R153976.exe. Running this file results in an unzipping of files to a folder on my C drive (C\dell\drivers\R153976). Then when I opent the R153976 folder, there is one subfolder called "FAX". Opening the "FAX" sub folder shows a whole host of other sub folders broken down by language as well as a long list of individual files....among which is "setup.exe". And here is where my trouble is: When I go to run setup.exe it looks as though something is starting to happen and then.....nothing.
I've tried downloading this to more than one machine and got the same results each and every time. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it possible the setup.exe executable file is corrupt or broken?
This is very frustrating. Any help, guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.
This printer actually belongs to a client who is running Windows Vista 32bit.
I checked the list of drivers that you provided and see that there over 17 entries in that list for Vista 32bit - all of which show the same version number (A01) and release date. And as far as what I can see, they all have different and distinct executable file numbers.
I am confused as to why there are so many entries that seem to be identified for Vista 32 bit and why, on the one hand, they all have the same version number yet their individual executable files are all different .
Am I going to have to try each and every one of these in order to find out which one is going to work?
Just upgraded from Vista Home 32 bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. After the upgrade, my Dell 926 printer stopped working cuz the troubleshooter said it did not have and could not find a driver. Here is the link which successfully re-installed the printer for me:
Under the "supported operating systems" tab, it does list Windows 7 32 bit. It does NOT list 64 bit.
If you are a tech novice like me: before you download via the above link, unplug the power block and the printer usb cable from the printer. Then do the download. The setup process will prompt you to plug the cords back into the printer.
Also, when you start the download process, use the "save" option and save the download to someplace you can find it, like your desktop.
Once the download is complete, you will need to double-click the file to unzip the files. When the files are unzipped, double-click the "setup.exe" and you should be on your way to a quick install.
After reading your entry above I couldn't help but think that you're user name is inappropriate as you don't seem helpless at all from what I read. Quite the contrary.
Kudos to you that you figured it the issue for yourself. As they say, genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. You did the work, you got your answer. Kudos.
One of your points underscores one of the basic tenets of printer installation: You leave the printer disconnected from the PC until the driver installation software tells you to connect it to your computer. Again, good for you that you learned that on your own, and even better that you took the time to share your knowledge here.
One other "basic" I would add to your scenario. Always uninstall the old driver software before installing the new - that presumes the old driver software was still registered under your computer's list of installed programs (Win 7: go to control panel, then programs - there you'll see the list of programs installed on your pc - which can and often includes printer driver software).
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.
I too have a Dell 926 AIO printer that came with my Dell XP computer. I have the factory disc with drivers & utilities.
I picked up a use 926 for $20 and would like to try it on my Dell W-7 laptop. I really like the 926's and have pleanty of extra Dell ink. I have tried to set up a printer on my laptop so not sure what is on there as far as printer software go.
I have a Surface Book running Windows 10. I have a Dell Photo 926 All-In-One printer. Is it possible to run this patch on my computer since I don't have Vista and don't know how to use it?

indyaggies,
Is your operating system 32-bit or 64-bit? Did you try the drivers I linked to in the above post?
Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)
Operating system in English or another language?
michaelkelly2011,
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...
Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)
Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications. If you did not install any, then Windows Defender is the default. Try reading...

I have listed the 64-bit drivers in the first thread in the Dell 922 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Rick, we have tried all of the above with no luck. --Device USBPRINT\Dell_Photo_AIO_Printer_926\8&27e27721&0&USB001 requires further installation.
as we continue to get Communication Not Available.
Do you have any idea of where we went wrong?
thanks. Bruce

Bruce,
Is your operating system in English?
What operating system? 32-bit or 64-bit?
What virus program and firewall are you using?
