I'm using Avira Free Antivirus and Comodo Firewall. I'm connecting the laptop via a USB directly to the printer (Dell 2150cn), but can't print to any printer.

Please bear with me. I usually help with Dell inkjet printers, so we may have to work together with this, since it's a Dell laser printer. I also do not know anything about professional, I'm a limited user at my work.

Can you clarify this? You want to do a host computer printer share? How are the other printers connected?
I think you have a firewall issue. I could not find the exact settings for Avira, to allow the printer to communicate. The Avira Firewall Information may help.
We recently got a Dell Optiplex at work with Windows 7 Professional. I got a little chance to use it before they locked some of the features for restricted users. To add the printer, click on add printer and if you know the ip address, it was very easy to configure. The printer did not come up in the list of printers, when I tried to add it from the list on the print server.

Much thanks for all your help. After spending several more hours, I reached a point of either tossing the dell laptop out of the window, or simply restoring an earlier image from a backup which I did.

Steve,
Can you please run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and post the rest of the information back here.
Also include the virus program and firewall you're using.
Make and model of the printer and how you're trying to connect the printer to the computer.

I think you have a firewall issue. I could not find the exact settings for Avira, to allow the printer to communicate. The Avira Firewall Information may help.
I do have the information for Comando. How to allow file and printer sharing past Comodo
