Dell V305w printer offline through network until USB plugged in.

I've had this printer since 2009 and it has lived well. I bought a new computer, Samsung running Win 8. I ran through the installation just fine. But when I wanted to print something, it wouldn't. I got up to check and plugged the printer into the computer, then it printed. Needless to say that was not what I was expecting. So, why does it appear offline and not work until I plug it in?
