HP P1005 installation problem - cannot connect
Hi, I am trying to install a HP P1005 on my Dell Dimension 4550 but after I connect the usb cable to the PC (when the installation software prompts for it) it seems the PC cannot see and connect to the printer. I have tried to use the downloaded installation software from HP with the same problem. Under device manager, I don't see any printer. System running on Win XP Home. The printer used to work on the same system after installation from the disk but I am having this problem now after a clean install of Win XP. Other devices installed without any problems. Thanks for your inputs.

mikeraj,
When you upgraded the operating system, did you download and install the drivers in order? Failing to install the desktop utility and the chipset drivers first, will cause the other drivers to fail. How to Install Drivers in Microsoft® Windows® on Dell Systems
You will need to install the drivers in the compatibility mode.
Right click on the drivers file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to XP. Then right click on the drivers, left click run as administrator.
Disconnect the printer. Uninstall the printer, then restart your computer
Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Try going to HP'sWebsite and download the Windows 7 drivers. Try installing them. If they fail to install, then disconnect the printer, uninstall the printer, restart your computer, then make sure the printer is removed. Now try the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

Problem resolved. It was a bad usb cable connection.
The drivers were installed from the Dell disk, no issues with that
