Did you go to Windows Updates, click on custom and get all the updates for .net framework, needed to run many applications? Have you Download Latest Java?
After the above is complete, run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup urility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer.
You can then use the printer disk and install the printer. If no printer disk, then download the XP drivers. Install the XP drivers first. You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
Dear Rick: Thanks for addressing this issue. I have followed your advice to others who've had problems with their 926 AIOs. Your suggested fix to me is the same as what you'd suggested to those other users. I do still have some questions you may be able to answer.
1- You state that "Virus programs and firewalls will block communications". Do you mean that anti-virus programs have the potential to block communications? Or, do you mean that a virus I may have picked up somewhere may be blocking communications?
Incidentally, I am up to date with .net framework updates as well as the latest Java updates. You think that shutting down my antivirus program and any running firewall, and then running the Dell cleanup utility, and then uninstalling and reinstalling the printer's driver from the originally received program disk might make a difference?
Hopefully scf /scannow will replace any corrupt or missing Windows files. If you have a Dell computer, I would suggest an operating system repair. The procedure is simple but if you have a non-Dell system, you have a high risk of losing files and folders. I usually suggest making copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.
Ususally when a printer does not install with Xp, it's missing files and/or malware related.
It is, indeed, a Dell system. I ran the "scf /scannow" procedure. While it was running, I stepped away and when I returned to it, it had completed, so I don't really know if anything was repaired. The issue status as it stands now is:
1- I've uninstalled the printer and re-booted the system,
2- I've run the Dell Cleanup utility patch program which I understand totally removes all traces of the printer installation.
Install the XP drivers first. You should get a message the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
If this does not work, I would suggest an operating system repair.
I first recommend making copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.
Insert the XP Operating system disk.
Restart your computer.
Press any key to boot from cd.
Choose install.
Do the agreement.
Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. You'll need to get all the Windows Updates, again. (This is the most painful thing, getting all the windows updates, especially the custom ones. .net framework is needed to run many applications and Download Latest Java
This is done with the printer disconnected. You then install the printer and get the prompt about the printer not being connected. Then connect the printer(powered on)

Stan Martin,
What virus protection are you using? I have the setting for some of them to allow the printer past them.

Stan Martin,
You are using XP 32-bit, correct?
Do you have the XP Operating system disk? Did you recently reinstall the operating system?
Operating system installed on the computer is English(US) correct?

XP-32 bit, correct. I do have the disc; I have not ever reinstalled the OS on this machine. It is in English.

Stan Martin,
We can first put the disk in and stop it from running.
Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Ypes
sfc /scannow (space between the c and /)
Hit enter and let it run.
Remove the disk and restart the computer when it's finished. Make and model of your computer?

Which disk are you referring to: the Microsoft Windows xp home OS disk, or the Dell All-In-One Center (printer) disk?
If it's the Microsoft disc you're referring to, what does running " sfc /scannow" do?

Stan Martin,
Printer was disconnected and still disconnected from the computer?
There were issues with theses items, maybe you have one of these.
Dell Studio™ 1536 Is Unable to Print Documents (AMD USB Audio Driver Filter) and uninstall NVIDIA's Network Access Manager
Make sure the pritner was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Install the XP drivers first. You should get a message the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
