Making toner save mode default

Question

I just got a Dell 1110 Laser printer, and am trying to figure out how to make 300dpi and Toner Save Mode a default setting rather than the 600dpi which uses more toner. This was easy on my Brother laser, when I selected Toner Save it defaulted there, but the Dell 1110 always uses the 600 dpi and non-Toner Saver mode.

Is there a trick to making Toner Save Mode default on this printer?

If you set the preferences under control panel / printers, they should stick.  If you set them in a particular application for a particular print job (like when you're about to print a Word document) they won't.
