NT Authority\system keeps deleting my printer

Hi

This has been driving me absolutely insane

I have installed a brand new HP Photosmart C4280 on my Dell E510 running Windows XP SP2.  Installed Perfectly fine and works like a charm.

Problem: at random, and without me using the computer, the Printer icon in the system tray suddenly displays "disconnected" status and then the printer disappears from my "Printers" folder.

When I check in the event veiwer log, I see two warning messages. one stating the the printer is Pending deletion (Event ID 4), and a second later in timing, another warning message stating the printer was deleted (Event ID 3). Both are carried out by user: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

This has happened over and over and over again, no matter how many times I have actually uninstalled and reinstalled the printer.

Sometimes, if I do not do anything about it, a few hours or a day later, the computer suddenly discovers the printer again as a new device and starts the installation process all over again only to delete it a day or two later.

Called HP: absolutely no help. The best thing they said was : This is a very unique problem, we have never heard of such a thing.

Everything else on my computer works fine, I have many USB peripherals and are all working fine

Please help anyone.

It sounds like you might have a bad USB cable and/or a possible failing or problem USB port.

Try this first. Log in on an unrestricted account. Disconnect your printer. Go to device manager. USB controllers. Starting at the bottom, un-install everything in that section. Restart your computer. Windows will find everything and correct the USB problem, if there was one.

Install your printer this way

Disconnect your printer. Go to start/programs/HP printers and un-install your printer Also go to the control panel and make sure the printer is removed..

Restart your computer.

Now go to here. Download the proper drivers and utilities you need.

Install your printer. You'll be prompted when to connect it.

Then the Utilities

Restart your computer. If the problem still presists, try another USB cable.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try these options and let you know

By unrestricted account, do u mean log in as an Admin?

Do I disconnect all my USB peripherals before I uninstall the USB controllers?

Thanks
