Network installation of printer without CD
Hi folks,
I've got a Dell 3100CN connected directly into my network router, and have previously used the installation CD to easily complete installation of the printer with each computer on the network.
However, we seem to have mislaid the disc, and the only download I can find on the support website is for the drivers themselves, not the installation software that actually finds the printer on the network. I'm not able to locate the printer using the Windows XP "Add Printer" tool, as it's connected directly to the network itself rather than being shared via another PC.
Any marvellous ideas out there? Thanks in advance for your help!
Best wishes,
Ben

The first thing I would do is LOCK the printer IP address using the printer control panel..... so you don't have a problem later if the IP should change on you. Assuming your router is set to one of the most common settings, i.e., 192.168.x.1 (or similar), set the printer near the top of the scope, like 192.168.x.253.
Now, find where you extracted the drivers after you downloaded and extracted them..... you will need this later on in this LONG procedure.
How to do a driver only install for a printer NOT advertised on the Network:
(you must have ADMININSTRATOR rights on the PC where the drivers are being installed)
1. Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes > Add Printer
2. After the Add Printer Wizard opens, click Next.
3. Ensure that "Local Printer attached to this computer" is selected; click Next
4. Select "Create a new port" then froom the drop-list, slect "Standard TCP/IP Port"; click Next
5. After the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" opens; click Next
6. In the "Printer Name or IP Address" field, enter the IP address given the printer. Note that as you type in the IP address, the Port Name field pre-populates and assumes the name "IP_xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". You can accept this name or change it to a unique name; click Next
7. The next screen may advise you the device could not be identified. That's OK, we're not finished yet. In the Device Type section, ensure "Standard" is selected. In the drop list, select "Generic Network Card"; click Next
8. Check the settings established then click Finish
9. In the "Add Printer Wizard" screen, click the "Have Disk" button.
10. In the "Install From Disk" pane, click "Browse..." and navigate to the location of the driver file on your hard drive.
11. After the file is located and selected, click the "Open" buttton.
12. The complete file path should now be contained in the field "COpy Manufacturer's files from:", click OK
13. In the "Add Printer Wizard" screen, the printer should be listed; click Next.
14. If drivers for this printer already exist on this compouter, this next screen will ask if you wish to "Keep existing driver" or "Replace existing driver"; choose "Replace..." and click Next.
15. The "Name Your Printer" screen appears. You can keep the name prepoulated by the driver, or change it to anything desired. You can also assign this as your default printer or not. Make any changes, if needed, then click Next.
16. The "Printer Sharing" screen appears. Configuring printer sharing can be done later. For now, ensure "Do not share this printer" is selected; click Next.
17. The "Print Test Page" screen opens. Leave "Yes" selected and click Next.
18. Check the settings established then click Finish.
The drivers are now being installed. After completion, a test page is sent to the printer. Ensure it printed succesfully then click OK. The printer wizard closes.
Assuming the PCL drivers were installed first, this entire procedure must be repeated to install the PS drivers.
