When a printer is uninstall, then reinstalled, sometimes your programs will default to Microsoft XPS Document Printer. Training the documents takes time. So if you are too quick to print, even with the Dell 966 Printer set as default, these incorrect printer may happen with Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word/Excel, and other programs.
since 2007. Is it possible that it can't accept some of the new file extensions/types? I thought it may be an issue with processing the file from Silhouette Design studio but the pdf won't print either. Should i just get a new one?
You open the document, clicked on file, print and made sure the proper printer was selected?
There will not be new drivers for this printer. This printer was made for Dell by Lexmark and no more drivers will be created for this printer. Windows 7 and Windows 8 allow the printer to install in the compatibility mode, so this should not be a problem.
Can you copy na doucment under the glass? Black and white and color?
-Copy works, I scanned pictures 2 days ago.
You ran Delete Print Jobs then restarted the computer?

-I am on a Vista system. I first noticed the problem when trying a print feature from that design program I have. I thought maybe the types of files or containers of those files were incompatible with the 966. The printer is 6 years old so I suppose upgrading wouldn't be terrible, but I just bought ink... I don't know what else to do.
A print command should not have issues, even from another program. The Vista drivers should install without any issues. Having the latest Windows updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many programs and Download Latest Java usually helps.
Is the printer using the wireless adapter or usb cable?
usb cable. I just updated java as well. My black ink is out so it would have to go through the complete-a-print using just the color but it doesn't even make it to the status bar of the printer. I don't ever see it. The document goes to the printer queue and that is all.
It did print sometimes though using complete a print. I don't want to buy a new cartridge if the printer is still not functioning. It reads both ink levels fine it just can't print the cartridge alignment bc the black wont print.
Do you think the cartridge being empty is the problem? Even though it has printed in the past without it?
It's 6 years old and I don't want to spend $25 on a cartridge that may not work when I can buy a new printer for $100
You told the printer that the black cartridge was low and used complete-a-print. So the color cartridge works. The black needs replaced. Your options are to see if you can purchase Dell Series 7 ink cartridges or purchase a new printer. This is your decision. The printer is an older model, so you may be able to find a printer that meets your needs, have wireless.
I may be in the same situation as you. I was looking for the high capacity cartridges and having trouble locating them. I'm trying to wait until it's closer to school starting, to decide on a new printer or see if I can find ink cartridges that will work.
Thanks for the help. I'll probably just get a new printer and eat the cost of the color cartridge I just bought. I guess it was a good thing that they didn't have the black ink at the store...

If you try to delete from queue via the icon on the task bar it won't delete. It just shows "delting - printing" forever...

Ok. I'll try it again with the command line you suggest. Be back in a few to report. Thank you

teejay81,
Run Delete Print Jobs to remove stuck print job(s) from the queue, then restart your computer.
Open the document you want to print.
Click on file, print and make sure the proper printer is selected.

teejay81,
If the Dell Series 7 ink cartridges are low on ink and the sensor is not detected, the printer will not function, print, scan or copy.
Complete-a-print, I don't think you can have the boxes checked for both, one or the other.
