Printer Not Working since DSL added
Hi, I need some help with my printer. It quit working around the same time that I was having some technical problems and I had just gotten a cable line instead of dial up. There is zero response.I've done all the power cords, plug in checks and replug without the extension, etc. I have also done my own trouble shooting and it states in the help menu that the "all in one" will not work unless the bi-directional is enabled and I have tried to enable it with no success. Each time after I close it out I go back and it shows it is not enabled. I have tried re-installing the cd and everything is fine until it begins to update the system, then I get this message; Add Printer () Failed--The specified print monitor is unknown and then the only option I have is to hit okay.So I really don't know if it is due to adding the new cable internet or if it is due to my previous problem where I had to re-install my running system in order to solve some other technical problems I was having. I have spoken to several technicians in India and after the last one could not help me, he wanted to transfer me and I asked for a direct number in case we were disconnected(as had happened previously) but he said we would not get disconnected and transferred me on. Well, we didn't get disconnected, but after another half hour on hold the battery on my phone finally gave up. So I really need some help!!!! Please do not refer me to technical support!! I'm on this forum to try and get help from others who may have experienced a similar problem. Thanks, MecheG

MecheG,
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums.
Try this and see if it helps. Disconnect the printer USB cable. Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove programs and uninstall the A940 printer software.
Then go to Printers & Faxes and right click the printer icon and select delete.
Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer. Go back to Printers & Faxes in the Control Panel, select File then Server Properties.
In the drivers tab, delete all the entries for the printer. Reboot the system but Do NOT reconnect the printer.
Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD that was shipped with your printer, into the CD drive.
The Installation Wizard window appears and searches for an appropriate driver.
Scroll through the list of drivers and select X:\drivers\ from the Location column.
Where X represents the CD drive letter.
Click the Next button.
Several Installation Wizard windows automatically open and close.
Click the Finish button to complete the installation.
Click the Start button, then click Run.
The Run window appears.
In the Open: box, type the following text:
X:\
Where X represents the CD drive letter.
Click the Browse button.
The Browse window appears.
Click to highlight SETUP.EXE, then click the OK button.
The Dell Drivers and Utilities window appears.
Double-click the Install the printer for Use on this Computer only (Personal Installation) option.
Several installation windows will automatically open and close.
The Congratulations window appears after the installation process has completed.
Click the Print a Test Page option to verify the printer setup.
Click the Finish button.
Click the Exit button.
Respectfully,
MecheG

Well, it hasn't quite worked that way. when I came to the part about clicking on the icon to delete the icon, delete was not an option(right click) so I double clicked to open and nothing showed and I moved on to the next step. then after I inserted the cd,( I assumed you meant the one drivers and utilities,Dell Personal All in One Printer), It would not allow me to proceed until I plugged in the USB, so again I continued on, went ahead and plugged it in and tried to install, hoping, but unfortunately it would not work. I really appreciate you taking the time to type all that out and trying to help me.
I'm going to keep trouble shooting and try your way again and double check to see if I missed something or perhaps did something wrong.Something I noticed today, which is a huge key to this puzzle is that the scanner works. I can scan and print a document. The problem I am having is the communication between the computer and the printer, either the cord/connection(unlikely) or somehow I lost the driver or another crucial application. Since the computer will not allow me to re-install the printer cd, I am forced to go back and try and find the original printer driver, which is contained on one of the cd's that came with my computer.I believe that cd to be the Drivers and Utilities, Dell Dimension Resource cd, which lists under contents, device drivers, diagnostics and utilities, computer documentation. I will re-post and ask that crucial question. What and where is the printer driver for the dell a940? Thanks again for your help, MecheG
