Printer Problems
Hi There--I will begin this note by saying that I've never had problems with my printer until I connected my digital camera to the computer for the first time. Shortly thereafter if I click print on anything I get a window that says "Save as file". I was told to uninstall and reinstall my printer capability and did that. For a few days, it was fine and printing continued. Now suddenly the same window appears each time I click print and am unable to delete it. I feel there is something that I can do to eliminate this window and go back to printing, but for the life of me, can't figure it out. It has become quite disconcerting. If anyone has any idea what can be done I would appreciate any help and it needs to have easy directions as I'm no computer nerd. I am operating with IE7 on the windows home media edition on a 521 computer. Thanks to anyone with any ideas.

HelBel,
Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.
First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer.
Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer.
Download the proper drivers.
XP Drivers
Vista 32-bit Drivers
Vista 64-bit Drivers.
All other drivers
Install the proper drivers.(ONLY install the drivers you need) You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Hi Rick--Thank you so much for your instructions. I have run into a problem and need to ask for more help. I checked the windows updates and upgraded the Java. Disconnected the printer and click "the patch". You said to run it until it was time to restart the computer. I never got there. As I was going through the instructions it came to a window that wanted to know if I wanted to save the information or cancel the window. I didn't know what to do so hit "save" and up came the window with "save as file". That's the same window that kept coming up when I clicked print. Anyway that's where I stopped and decided I needed further information from you. If I save the file what happens?? Do I have to name it or just go with the subject line that they used?? I'm sorry--you can see I'm a little out of my league on this thing. Oh, by the way I forgot to tell you that I do have Windows XP. I'll wait for more instructions from you. Thanks again for helping such a dummy!!!!!!

HelBel,
I should have been a little more specific. Downloand the files using your browser. I think you're trying to download the Dell Download Manager, which has caused greif for people. Save the file to your desktop. Double click on it. If it installs the Dell Download manager, then it will. Then you'll need to download the patch, again and double click on it. Run it until it prompts you to restart your computer, then restart your computer.
Double click on the proper drivers. If might just sit there. If so, the look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator. At this time you'll see something to the affect that the printer is not connected. At this time you connect the printer(Powered on)

Helen,
Is this happening with a certain program, like Microsoft Works? If so, when you go to print, select file, then print and make sure the proper printer is selected from the drop down menu.
Also click on start, control panel, printers and make sure your printer is listed and then make sure it is the default printer(one with the grenn check mark.

Hi Rick--Thank you again for all the information. I just completed all the above steps and when I got the printer hooked back up I decided to try the "print" again and I still have the window that says "save as file". Unless you have more options, I guess I'd better call Dell and let them connect up and look for the problem. I'll wait to hear from you about that before I call. In the meantime, I read your bio and want to tell you that we were stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton in the late 70s and spent a wonderful vacation in Lancaster and the Amish country. You live in a wonderful part of the world and I imagine it's gorgeous with changing leaves, etc. this time of the year. Take care and thanks again--Helen

Hi Rick--No it doesn't happen with a certain program. It happens if I want to copy from the Internet or from e-mail. I clicked file and checked the printer and it is checked and went to the control panel and my printer is listed as the default printer. Just for the heck of it, I decided to click "print" when I was checking and the same window "save as file" came up asking me to name the file and save it to my computer. I just want to print not save things to the computer. Do you have any other ideas or is it time for me to make the dreaded call to Dell??? Thank you again--Helen

Helen,
Sorry for the delay, was trying to look at different settings to see if I could find anything.
Do you see the printer at...
start, control panel, Printers?

Good Morning--Yes, I followed your instructions and there is a black check mark next to the Dell Photo AI0 Printer 924 so I assume that is the indicator. I'll wait for more instructions. Thanks--Helen

Helen,
What browser an what email program are you using?
Did you try using system restore and take the computer back to the time before you added the camera?

Helen,
With the printer disconnected, did you...
run the patch to remove the printer until it prompted you to restart your computer?
double click on the proper drivers and have the file unzip. If the folder just sat there, double click on setup.exe and then the drivers should start to install.
The patch is a printer cleanup utility and removes the printer so you can start with a clean slate. The proper drivers contain the drivers and most of the software needed to have the printer work.

Hi Rick--I am using Internet Explorer 7 and Hotmail is my e-mail. No, I haven't even thought about system restore because the computer printed for a few days after the camera was attached. That was just the only thing that I could think of that had been changed. The printer worked until suddenly the window with "save as file" came up. Then when I was advised to uninstall and reinstall, the printer worked maybe a week or so and then the window came up again. I would prefer not to do the system restore unless that's the only alternative. Helen

Hi Rick--As far as I know I completed everything with the patch. You know I had several questions that you answered and I was able to do it. However, I will run through the whole procedure again but it will have to be tomorrow as I'll be out of pocket today. Just wanted to let you know that I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks again--Helen

Hi Rick--I have just spent the last hour trying to get the patch to work. The best thing I can do is tell you what happens so that you can follow along. I click "the Patch" from your list and up comes a page called Drivers and Downloads. Dell Photo All in One Printer with a description and that it is a patch/upgrade. I click download now and the window launches application. Then a window titled "Dell Driver Download Manager" comes up and asks whether I want to save this file named R166243.zip? I click save and another window opens that says "save as" and then it lists My Documents, etc. File name R166243 -- save or cancel. When I clicked save it tells me that the file is already there and do I want to replace it? I went ahead and replaced it and then the window just stays open and tells you that the file has downloaded. It just stays open until you hit cancel and apparently that cancels everything. You said to go back and then download the patch but this happens everytime I try to do that. I hope I have given you enough to realize that I can't get to a point that it asks me to restart the computer. What am I doing wrong?? I guess this happened the first time I tried it and your instructions got me past it but not this time. Thanks--Helen

Helen,
If that's the case, then the Patch (R166243) in in your Start, documents folders. Double click on it with the printer disconnected. It should prompt you to restart your computer.
Then you'll download _G11AWeb32924EN.exe (XP Drivers) Double click on it and it will unzip and install the drivers on it's own.

Hi Rick--Sorry it has taken so long to respond but we have had storms that had my Satellite Internet down. It turned out that the patch and the Dell Printer Driver were both in my documents, however I couldn't get them to unzip. Finally I clicked something that made a folder extractor wizard appear and I followed it to the conclusion and found out about it and the Windows Zip Self-Extractor. The great news is that my printer is fixed!!!!! Apparently the the new driver also included the menu that I had never seen for my printer with the scan, fax, etc. capability. Thank you so very much for all of your patience--I have to say that you have taught me so much about my computer. You have spent endless time trying to get this repaired and it was no easy feat dealing with a "computer illiterate". I'm making copies of all of your information and hopefully won't have to bother you with this again!!!! Bravo!!! Take care--Helen
