Printer dialog box doesn't close
I have Dell Inspiron 518 with Vista OS and a Lexmark X6170 printer. It prints normally except that the print job dialog box does not close. To clear the last print job and do the next print job, I have to turn my printer off and back on. I downloaded the right driver for Vista from the Lexmark site and the Lexmark techs knew nothing beyond the typical reboot and unplug advice. Does anyone have any insight into how to get my printer to communicate better with my computer?

avidonscot,
Most Dell Inkjet printers are made by Lexmark and they, for the most part have a removal tool. I see Lexmark doesn't offer this type of tool, so we'll have to do some things manually.
First, most programs need net framework and the latest Java to work properly. Net framework can be downloaded and installed from Windows Update, custom updates. I haven't had too many problems with printers not installing unless the operating system has some type of malware and/or needs repaired.
Disconnect the printer.
Un-install the printer.
Restart the computer. Make sure the printer is gone. Manual Printer Driver Removal. Also right click on start, left click explore, look for program files folder and click the + sign. If you happen to find a Lexmark printer folder and/or something similar for your printer, delete this folder.
Restart your computer.
I would then run a registry cleaner(I really don't promote this action unless it's a last resort). I would use jv16 Power tools to clean out the only Lexmark registry values.(Open jv16 power tools, registry tool, tools, registry cleaner, continue, start)(When it's done scanning click on select, special select, items that should be safe to remove, click remove selected). If the registry cleaner doesn't remove anything, restart your computer and try one more time.
Restart your computer.
Install the proper drivers from Lexmark's website. You didn't state if you have Vista 32-bit or 64-bit on the computer. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on) Please use a 4ft or smaller USB Cable as USB ports don't carry much current.
What happens?

Thank you for the advice. I will try it when I have time. Right now, I'll stick with turning on and off and live with the inefficiency. At least it prints. Its sort of like using a TV without the remote control.
