I carefully followed your instructions (removing the printer from the system, downloading correct driver (VISTA 64 bit), running setup in compatibility mode, ... ), but it still doesn't work.
The problem is that when I run the setup software (in compatibility mode and running as administrator), at a certain point I have to connect the printer (powered on). The PC then automatically detects the printer, and starts installing drivers (7 in total):
Composed USB device: ready for use
Dell Photo AIO Printer 966: ready for use
USB inputdevice: ready for use
USB device for mass storage: ready for use
support for USB printing: ready for use
Dell USB Mass Storage USB device: ready for use
Dell Photo AIO Printer 966: no driver found
The setup software then automatically continues installing, and appearently everyhing installs OK, but I just can't print. If
I try to print the testpage, this also doesn't work. I get a message: The Dell Photo AIO Printer 966 printer driver is not installed. Please install your printer driver.
Can't you send me just the correct printer driver for the AIO 966 for a Windows 7 64 bit OS? Or do you have other options still to test first?
Did you then navigate to (C:\Program Files\Dell 966\Drivers) and create a Dutch Folder. Copy and paste the everything in the English folder. Go to the Dutch folder, then paste them there.
Then right click on the Vista 64-bit drivers and install it again. This time it should install it will prompt you to connect the printer(powered on)
I have a folder called C:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 966\Drivers containing 2 subfolders: Common and X64. In the subfolder Common there was already a folder "Dutch" (containing 3 files) and also the subfolder X64 contains a folder "Dutch" next to 60 other files. That folder Dutch (C:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 966\Drivers\X64\DUTCH) contains 8 DLLs. There was no folder "English", in neither of the above mentioned folders, so I couldn't / can't follow your instructions.
For your information: it is possible to scan using the AIO 966 program and directly from the "Devices and Printers" Section, but in this section, if I right click the Photo AIO Printer 966 I can't see the specific Printer related menu-items like "Display Printer Tasks", "Set as Default Printer", "Printer Properties", ... . Maybe this gives you a clue?
download drivers following your link (which are the drivers I always used) onto the desktop
run the "Web64966en.exe" program
go to the folder "C:\dell\drivers\R165704" and run the program "Setup.exe" in compatibility mode as administrator
this created the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell Photo AIO Printer 966" which includes 171 files and 1 folder called "Install"
What should I do next (for after running the setup.exe which I mentioned before, I got the same problems / error message as indicated in previous mails (system indicating that there is no printer driver for the AIO 966).
That is exactly what I have been doing so far: in the compatibility tab, set the checkbox "Use compatibility mode" and pick "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) in the scrollbox. Then click apply and run the setup.exe as adminstrator. Everything seems to be installing fine, but the system tells me that the installation of the printer driver was not succesfull (all other 6 drivers install perfectly), and if I try to print a testpage (one of the options upon completion of running setup.exe) nothing happens.
Yesterday you mentioned "create a Dutch folder and copy everything in it", but at what level (in which folder) should I create this folder? There is no "English" folder available e.g., so I can't do something similar. In my previous message I mentioned the file / folder structure that is available on my PC.
My suspicions tell me these drivers might be Vista drivers. Right click on install, left click properties, compatibility. Select Vista compatibility mode, click on. Right click on setup, left click run as administrator and it should install.

Danny,
Was your Vostro Upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit?
When you installed Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) did you install the desktop/notebook utility and the chipset drivers first? If not the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order If you cannot find Windows 7 drivers, then try using the Vista (or XP) 32-bit drivers, for Windows 7 32-bit of the Vista (or XP) 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit and install the drivers in the Compatibility mode
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer.
Download the Vista 64-bit drivers. Install the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode It may not prompt you to connect the printer. Language Solution for Dell Inkjet Printers You'll need to navigate to (C:\Program Files\Dell 966\Drivers) and create a Dutch Folder. Copy everything from the English Folder to the Dutch Folder.

For Virus Program and Firewall nothing special: Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Firewall (standard)
USB printing (no network printing).
Thanks for your support.
