Do you get any error message when you try to scan?
May I know the operating system that you are using on your computer?
You can use Windows utility to scan and see if it works. If you are able to scan through Windows utility, it is an issue with printer driver and you might need to re-install that.
Before you proceed with these steps, make sure that your scanner (or multifunction device with scanning capabilities) is connected to your computer and turned on.
Place a document on the scanner, or, if the scanner has a document feeder, place one or more pages in the feeder. If your scanner offers both options, use the option that you prefer.
Click the ' Start button', click 'All Programs', and then click ' Windows Fax and Scan'.
To use 'Scan' view, at the bottom of the left pane, click 'Scan'.
On the toolbar, click 'New Scan'.
In the 'New Scan' dialog box, click the 'Profile list', and then click 'Documents'. The default settings for scanning a document, which you can use or change, are automatically displayed.
To see how a document will appear when scanned, click 'Preview'. If needed, change your scan settings, and then preview the document again. Repeat this step until you are satisfied with the preview results.
Click 'Scan'. When the scan is complete, Windows Fax and Scan automatically displays the document so that you can view and manage it.
Alternatively, If you have Windows XP , you can also use 'Scanner and Camera Wizard' to see if the scanner works. Following are the images as an example and options may vary depending on the device connected to your computer:
From "My Computer" right click the Dell 944 printer.
Select 'Get picture using Scanner Wizard'.
Click "Next" at the welcome screen.
Select the save options that you require and click "Next".
The Wizard will now start to scan using the settings you specified.
Select the "Nothing. I'm finished working with these pictures" and click "Next".
The images will then be saved to the the location that you specified in step 4.
Another step you can try is to check if you are able to scan from printer through network. If your printer is attached to a network, you can scan photos or documents and have them sent to any computer on the network by following the steps below:
1. Turn on your printer and external network adapter, and make sure they are connected. 2. Open the top cover. 3. Place the document you want to scan face down on the scanner glass. Make sure the upper left corner of the front of the document aligns with the arrow on the printer. 4. Close the top cover. 5. Press the Arrow buttons on the operator panel until Scan Mode is highlighted, and then press the Select button . 6. Press the Arrow buttons to scroll through the available computers until you find the one you want to send your photo or document to, and then press the Select button . 7. Enter the PIN number for the computer, if one is required. Use the up and down Arrow buttons to select a number (0–9), and the left and right Arrow buttons to proceed to the next field. 8. Use the Arrow buttons to select an application in which to open your document, and then press the Select button . 9. Press the Start button .
The photo or document is scanned, sent to the specified computer, and opened in the specified application.

Ann,
Can you copy a document under the glass? Black and white and color?
Do you have the Dell All-In-One Center installed?
Do you have Abbyy Fine Reader installed?
