Problems with the 3100cn and larger documents w/ CUPS/Linux

Hello,
I have been trying to use my 3100cn to print files from my Gentoo linux computer using v1.1.17 of CUPS and the "Dell Laser Printer 3100cn v3015.102 PS" Model file provided on the printer's driver CD. I have used the printer without problem for a few months, although I had yet to print a large document.

Today I tried to print a 24 page long PDF (2.4 megabytes) from evince in GNOME 2.12.2. The document began to spool normally, the printer sprang to life, making its typical whirring noises, and out came the first 3 pages, followed by a blank sheet not found in the file I was printing. The printer then stopped, and went silent, still saying "Printing LPD..." on its little screen. I became worried, so I checked what my computer thought the printer was doing, and got the message "Spooling LPR job, 74% complete..." . I canceled the job and resent it to no avail.

The printer was frozen solid; none of the buttons on the printer itself worked, nor did it act upon any instructions from the computer. At this point, I restarted the printer with the side power switch, and tried again. And again. And again (about ten times). The printer simply would not print the document. I tried to printer other documents, including a 25 megabyte image, all without problem. But it cannot print this, or other long PDFs.

I assumed that the problem lay in evince's PostScript output of long PDFs, so I tried printing the document to another printer, an HP. This time, it worked flawlessly, verifying that the Dell 3100cn was indeed the source of my problem. I have restarted the printer numerous times (once between each test, as well as a few times afterwards), as well as the cupsd daemon and my entire computer, all to no avail.

I am thoroughly confused at this point, and would be incredibly grateful for any help whatsoever.

Thank you very much,
Adam A.

If you want email me the file and I will try it on mine from win2k. Either way it would narrow down the problem.

Worked fine on mine. Here is my setup:

win2k with all service packs.
conecting to printer via network port through router.
dell 3100cn with stock 64m of ram.
upgraded to newest firmware

various firmware versions from printer settings report:

postscript version 3015.102
printer firmware version 200601161049
boot version 200406111556
engine version 01.06.00
postscript crd version 200501111051
network firmware version 6.35

Printed using Adobe Acrobat version 7.0.0.

I would suggest upgrading your printer firmware to match mine, and see if you still have the problem. Other than that, I guess we have ruled out a design flaw in the printer and you are down to a linux driver issue or a physical problem with your printer.

Maybe someone else on here that uses Linux can test the file?

Try using the PPD from easysw.com:
http://www.easysw.com/printpro/printers.php

They provide one for a Dell 3100cn

Just to make it a tad easier, here is the direct link to the ppd

http://www.easysw.com/~mike/cups/ppd/dell/en/dl3100cn.ppd.gz

also, in YAST2, if you select print directly to network printer, and when it asks for the ppd file, just put in that url, it works like magic. (When did Linux become easy? - Now we jsut have to get the rest of the BG world to realize it)

Last week the Dell 3100cn drivers just stopped working for no decernable reason. I tried re-installing both the CUPS side and the Windows side. No luck.

The Dell 3100cn seems to be a rebranded Lexmark Optra Color 1200.
It also seems to be part Fujitsu.

Don't even bother trying to call Dell support as it's just a waste of time. They didn't make this printer and seem to know nothing about it.

CUPS (under RHEL4) and XP both had builting drivers for the Lexmark and seem to work fine.
