Scanning problems with Dell 1600n using USB

I have my Dell MFP 1600n connected via both the network interface for printing, and USB for scanning. The printing works fine (as does copying and faxing).

However, there are some serious issues with scanning. I followed the recommended procedure from Dell:

Start --> Control Panel --> Scanners and Cameras (double click icon) --> "Dell Laser MFP 1600n" (double click icon)

The "Scanner and Camera Wizard" starts. So far so good. Then the following problem occurs:

After around 15-20 seconds, the following message pops up in an error window. "The current picture could not be copied. To copy this picture click "Try Again." To stop copying, click "Cancel." Of course, clicking "Try Again" does nothing, and the wizard seems to hang (the above message does not even pop up a second time). The "Picture progress: % complete" bar does not even progress. The scanner does make some initial sounds and seems to move a bit, but then does nothing (even after several minutes).

Dell Tech Support seems to be clueless about this problem, and could offer me no help other than to send me URLs to material that I had already referred to.

If anyone there has witnessed this problem and found a solution for it, please indicate.

Is there any software that comes with the printer that you could use?

Can you try to connect it via parallel port and see if it still happens?

After having installed this machine last week, we (two of us who are computer savy, but not geek quality)  discovered the following:

The machine copies well

The machine faxes well

The machine prints well

The machine doesn't have a clue how to scan well.

NO ONE at Dell service/support wants anything to do with this machine.  They pass you off to the point where you finally have to tell them that you are unwilling to be passed off to someone else.

We immediatly went to the Visioneer website and purchsed a stand alone scanner.

Good Luck

I have also found the 1600n to be a good printer, fax & copier and a terrible scanner.

I have been using PaperPort for 6 years now so I am familiar with the software.  The problem is the 1600n WIA scan driver.  I cannot find any way to change the default settings.

Most of what I scan are multipage, letter sized, text documents.  My preferred scan setting is 300dpi.  The 1600n WIA scanner defaults are set for flatbed scanner, color picture and legal size paper.  So each time I scan a document using the WIA driver I have to first select the ADF, then select black and white picture or text, then adjust the quality of the scanned picture (from the 150 dpi default to 300 dpi), then select letter size paper (from a menu of about 30 sizes of paper, not listed in alphabetical or any other order I can discern).

Also, each page is scanned as a separate document, even though I am using the ADF.  This is not too much of a problem if I am scanning with PaperPort, because I can hit the Stack button after the document is scanned and compile it into a single document.  It is a real problem if I am scanning to Adobe Acrobat (which was my preferred software), since compiling lots of separate documents into a single document is not that simple with Adobe.

I finally figured out that I can change the default settings on the TWAIN driver, just not on the WIA driver.  So if I scan from either PaperPort or Adobe and select the TWAIN driver it will remember all of my default settings.

The control panel scan button is useless for my purposes, however, because it uses the WIA driver no matter which software I select.  Also, when using the scan button, the default is set to .bmp format when I select PaperPort (even though I have PaperPort set to pdf).  If I select Adobe Acrobat, it will only scan a single page from the ADF.  I have to hit the scan button for each page (creating a separate document for each page).

After deciding that the Dell wasn't going to work, we purchased a Vissioner (using Paperport 9) and it

works wonderfully, scanning 20 pgs a minute.

Highly recommend it for scanning.

No, the XP450 pdf.  We use it daily and have had no problems with it.  You must use the PaperPort software to make sure that it works well with documents.

Kennedy...with the Dell TWAIN driver you could have actually create a profile for your default settings instead of having set them manually.  The scan speed can be slow, but I like it for my needs.  iscoyd, I feel for ya...I have not seen this myself but I don't use the scanning wizard.  Paperport has been the best app for this MFP.
