J P,

Please try re-installing the printer this way and then tell us what happens. Please make sure your computer has all the Windows Updates, especially .net framework, which is needed to run many applications. Also make sure you have the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

I checked for the Windows updates- I automatically get them, but I checked anyway. I uninstalled Java and reinstalled the latest. I disconnected my printer and ran the patch, restarted the computer and downloaded the XP drivers. The scanner still works but not the printer. The errors were:
1.  spoolsv.exe Application Error:  The instruction at "0x76f6122e" referenced memory at "0x00000008". The memory could not be "read".
2. Spooler Subsystem App:     Spooler SubSystem has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Micorsoft about this problem.
3. Dell Photo AIO Printer 942 Communication Not Available:  The printer cannot communicate with teh computer. Please turn on "Enable Bidirectional  Communication" setting in the printer properties dialog.
4. Printer Properties:  Printer properties cannot be displayed. The print spooler service is not running.
Thanks for helping me.

J P,

I just had that exact error message for a 725 printer and then used the same procedure and got it working. Maybe try it one more time.

Disconnect the printer, right click on the patch, left click run as administrator, and run the patch until it prompts you to restart your computer. Restart your computer. Install the XP drivers.(you do have 32-bit system or 64-bit)

Let me know what happens now.

After trying 3 times the printer printed. I'm afraid to try too much but will keep the patch and download just in case I need it again. THANK YOU.

J P,

I burned the drivers and the patch to a CD, so if I need them, I can easily get them without downloading them again.

Please feel free to post back if the printer acts up. I still have a few small tweaks that helps to keep the communications with the printer and the computer that are very simple.

RIck,

If I was to get a new printer, would I have the same problem? This is way too frustrating.

Thanks.

J P,

If you have a computer with the proper virus protection and keep it updated with Windows Updates and run malware removal programs like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware, you shouldn't have any problems installing a printer. Your model of printer, and don't hold me to this, isn't on the list I see at Dell's website, so it may be an older model. I have a 964 printer connected to a Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 and had mine for 4 years or more. I have 5 laptops that can print to this, all different makes, models and operating systems. My printer is no longer made. The only thing you need to do is make sure the printer is XP compatable wit your operating system.

If you have some doubts about some issues with your computer, you could do a repair install, which will put the system back to the way it was when you purchased it. I always recommend that people make backup copies of files and folders that they cannot afford to lose. If you computer crashed tomorrow, do you have copies of your files and folders?

Insert the operating system disk that came with the computer and restart your computer. If you do NOT have a disk, then request one below my signature.

press any key to boot from cd.

Choose install.

Do the agreement.

Now choose repair. Leave the disk in untl you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes.

You'll need to get all the Windows Updates, again.

Rick,

I have done everything that you have suggested and everything works but the audio. When it was repairing it asked for a "Creative" cd which I could not find. It was looking for a file and it said what it was. It then said something about the audio. I couldn't stop the thing and ask you so now I do not know what to do.

Thank you so much for your time and patience with me.

J P,

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that you need to install these drivers in this order.

How to Install Drivers in Microsoft® Windows® on Dell Systems

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)
