USB to Parallel Cable

My friend sold me her printer of Lexmark z31, and that printer does not have USB port, and I am using a laptop without a parallel port, so I went ahead and got myself a USB to paralell cable. Then after connection and driver installation, I got "communication problems" each time I tried to print, and on the task bar, that small printer icon kept giving me an error of "document print failed." I am frustrated now, and I really look forward to hearing from your assistance. To that I am too much appreciated.
