Ubuntu and Airprint support for 1355cnw?

I'm thinking about getting a 1355cnw but before I do, I need to find out:

  1. Are Ubuntu printer drivers for the 1355cnw?  If not, are there equivalent/compatible Xerox drivers that I can load?
  2. What are the plans for Airprint support for this printer?

Thanks!

Bump....I've got the printer now.  Got past the airprint issues, however, I've not been able to print under ubuntu (tried PCL 4 and 5 to no avail).

Hi, how did you get The AirPrint work with the Printer? Just figured out, that my iPad doesn't find The Printer...

Here's a link to the airprint info (mind you, this isn't officially supported by Apple).

The Xerox WorkCentre 6015N drivers work perfectly with the 1355cn.  You can download the packages (DEB and RPM) from Xerox, here.

Glad to hear it!  In case anyone is having trouble getting the copy to email to work here is a quick tutorial:

The other thing that is 'wonky' with the printer is that the firmware does not support SSL.  This means that it cannot connect to any smtp server that uses encryption... yahoo, outlook, gmail, point-of-fact I cannot think of a email service that allows connecting on port 25 unencrypted.  Out of the box, this means that the functionality of copy to email will not work.  But there is a solution: stunnel4.

stunnel is a robust and free (gpl) application that creates a Secure Tunnel (STunnel) via SSL.  It listens on a specified port on your computer, and forwards traffic over SSL to the intended server.  Below is a schematic,

Printer (no SSL) ----port 25-----> My computer (stunnel) -----port 465------>  secure mail server

Download stunnel here.  It is cross-platform.  If you are using any modern Linux distro or BSD, stunnel should be in your repositories / ports collection.  Lastly, here is my stunnel.conf, I use gmail.

-----------------------------------------------

sslVersion = SSLv3
socket = l:TCP_NODELAY=1
socket = r:TCP_NODELAY=1
client = yes
pid = /var/run/stunnel4.pid

[pop3s]
accept = 110
connect = pop.gmail.com:995

[imaps]
accept = 143
connect = imap.gmail.com:993

[ssmtp]
accept = 25
connect = smtp.gmail.com:465
------------------------------------------------------

use your computer's ip address for the smtp or pop server on the printer. Stunnel will pass your logon credentials (username and password) to the mail server of your choice as defined in stunnel.conf.

Now that ubuntu is working, anyone have airprint working reliably?  My airprint support is very wobbly to say the least on the 1355.

Sorry, haven't done much color printing.

I have the 6015N driver installed and it only partially works. Colours are frequently printed wrong with imperceptible differences in an image resulting in massive differences in the print. This does not occur when printing from a Windows box.

For example,  the colour wheel at : http://gardenerstips.co.uk/blog/tips/colourful-tips/ is printed as http://babylon.jack.org.uk/dell/colourwheel-dellprinter.jpgAre you guys seeing similar things?

Well it is good to know that it could work.

There's no significant differences in my printers.conf, just that the reported toner levels are obviously different.

What version of Cups are you running and are you running 32bit or 64bit?

Thanks

I have had no trouble printing color.  The problem must be in the configuration of your printer.  Here is my /etc/cups/printer.conf file:

UUID urn:uuid:what-ever-you-uuid-is

Info Dell 1355cn Color MFP

MakeModel Xerox WorkCentre 6015N v1.0

DeviceURI socket://your.ip.address.goeshere

State Idle

StateTime 1350069487

Type 4300

Accepting Yes

Shared Yes

JobSheets none none

QuotaPeriod 0

PageLimit 0

KLimit 0

OpPolicy default

ErrorPolicy stop-printer

Attribute marker-colors \#00FFFF,#FF00FF,#FFFF00,#000000

Attribute marker-levels 99,98,98,89

Attribute marker-names Cyan Cartridge,Magenta Cartridge,Yellow Cartridge,Black Cartridge

Attribute marker-types toner,toner,toner,toner

Attribute marker-change-time 1350069516

Let me know if that works.

Thanks for the info.

My server is 1.5.3 on Ubuntu 64bit.

I have ran up a quick VM with Centos 32bit running 1.4.2 and this server works. With your info we have covered all the major differences  (i.e. deb/rpm, 1.5/1.4) and can therefore be relatively certain the problem is the 64bit - 32bit conversion.

I now know where to look to fix things.

Many thanks.

I am running CUPS 1.5.3-1 on Debian Testing 32 bit .

OK. I jumped to another false assumption there.

It is a problem with Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) - both 32 and 64 bit. Moving to 11.10 (Oneiric) fixed the problem :)

Thanks for the help.

You should be able to get Airprint to work by sharing the printer through CUPS.  On your Ubuntu Box, open the following URL in your browser: http://localhost:631

Go-to "Administration".  On the lower right-hand area, you should see Sever Setting and an Advanced menu.  Check the second box that reads, "Share Printers Connected to this System."

Your iOS device should be able to then see the printer.  Let me know if this works.
