V505 Copying/Scanning Problems

I am having problems with my Dell V505w printer.  When I try to copy or scan, the printer let's out a loud clicking sound for a minute or so, then the user panel screen displays a message saying "unrecoverable scan error".  While it is clicking, I can see under the glass that the lighted bar that does the scanning has ridden to the far left and almost appears to be "stuck" there, and the cable or belt that moves it across the scan area is twitching.

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting this to work correctly?  The printer works fine if I am printing documents from my computer.

Hi pjm19,

Please try the below steps to fix the scanning problem.

  • To reduce background noise on scanned documents.
In Windows Vista/Windows 7, click, Start and then click Programs. Next, click Dell Printers, and then click Dell V505.
In Windows XP, click Start, and then click All Programs. Next, click Dell Printers, and then click Dell V505.
In Windows 2000, click Start, and then click Programs. Next, click Dell Printers, and then click Dell V505.
  • Select Dell Imaging Toolbox. The Dell Imaging Toolbox dialog box opens.
  • From the Home screen, click My Photo Album.
  • Click File and then click Open to select the image that you want to edit.
  • With an image open, click the Advanced tab.
  • Click Image Patterns. The Image Patterns dialog box opens.
  • Select Reduce stray marks (background noise) on color documents.
  • Move the slider from left to right to adjust the quantity of background noise on the scanned document.
  • Click OK.
  • Ensure that the document or photo is loaded correctly on the scanner glass.
  • Ensure that the scanner glass is clean.

Wipe the scanner glass, as well as the thin strip of glass beside it, gently with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with water.

Please reply for further help.

I have just started having a similar issue with my V505....it somehow seems to have lost its calibration....i've found while its stuck up on the LH end stop making the clicking noise that if I pull out the power lead, wait a second or two and then reconnect it it seems to re-cal properly. It worked for me.

My V505 snanner makes a bad knocking noise. Scanner no doubt needs to be recalibrated. Anyone know how to do this? I tried software and shutting down power, waiting then restarting the computer and still the knocking happens anytime the scanner moves. The scanner does move from left to right about four inches then moves back to the left until it goes way off the window and starts ticking/knocking because it still trying to go to the left way off. Please help if you know how to fix this.

Your reply has NOTHING to do with the operation of the scanning mechanism!
